Douglas Brasier: A pioneer in Swedish golf architecture?
« on: September 01, 2010, 03:31:58 AM »
The "Golf in Denmark" thread got me thinking a bit about how little those outside Scandinavia know about golf in this region. I am at the very beginning of my education, golfing wise, and hope to play as many courses as I can and become familiar with Swedish designed courses and their architects.

I flicked through the free publication "Golfguiden 2010" that all golf club members receive each year. It contains listings for all 480 courses, and where known, the responsible architect. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the guide, but the name Douglas Brasier cropped up a number of times as the course architect. From doing a quick search on the web, it appears that he was an English golf professional who left England in 1929 and settled in Sweden. It is said he designed about 25 courses, mostly in the south of Sweden.

The guide attributes the following designs to Brasier. The date in parentheses is when the course opened (some dates are pre 1929)

Ljunghusens Golfklubb (1932)
Trelleborgs GK (1963)
Romeleåsens GK (1969)
Bosjökloster GK (1974)
Ljungbyheds GK (1933)
Kristianstads GK (1924)
Karlshamns GK (1966)
Ronneby GK (1965)
Carlskrona GK (1954)
Delsjö GK (1965)
Borås GK - North Course (1954)
Gullbringa G&CC (1967)
Billingens GK (1968)
Lidköpings GK (1968)
Växsjö GK (1961)
Tobo GK (1975)
Linköpings GK (1945)
Åtvidabergs GK (1956)
Torshälla GK (1960)
Billeruds GK (1964)
Köpings GK (1965)
Sala GK (1988)

Does anybody know anything else about him?
