2004 at The Dunhill. Is he one of The Open favorites now?

As much as I HATE to say it, Tiger has to be the favorite at The Old Course.
Best Played So Far This Season:
Crystal Downs CC (MI), The Bridge (NY), Canterbury GC (OH), Lakota Links (CO), Montauk Downs (NY), Sedge Valley (WI)

If Tiger can play mediocre golf and be top 5 at the Masters and US Open, then he has to be the prohibitive favorite at St Andrews. He owns that course and knows it.

Tiger's not the player now he once was.  That doesn't mean he can't get it back--he showed flashes at Pebble, especially on Saturday.  I think "prohibitive" favorite is a bit strong.  He definitely has lost the intimidation factor (at least for now) that was such a useful weapon for him.  I look for a competitive tournament with several British, Irish players and other European players, including possibly McDowell, in contention.

Agree with Tim.  Tiger was Tiger of Old for one round of four at the USGA Open.  He was not there for the four rounds he'll need at St. A.

By the way, was 14 at PB worse or better than 7 at Shinnecock?  Not quite the howls of protest we heard on L.I. in 2004.

Correction. Tiger was Tiger of old for one nine of eight at the USGA Open.
G Mac is a likely winner ;) at TOC.

I think the rigorous constraints on the time of a newly-minted major champ will take their toll and he won't be ready for St. A's, even though he knows it.  His routine might be off, and hence his rhythm.

G Mac's game, with straight driving, good irons and good short game certainly works at TOC. Adding his second major at the next possible chance is a big ask, though.

Agreed Martin.

Still suspect a European win for the Open, and certainly not TW.

There will be so many in contention for the OPEN and GM will be one of them.  If they have weather like Pebble had, and 10.3 greens, I predict the lowest cut in major history.  and the resurgence orf Sergio. :)

I dont think you can ever count out Tiger for a major, as demonstrated by his performance on saturday. These events are his main focus, so he really bears down to play well in them. If the wind blows, I think it gives him an even better chance because no one else in golf has all the shots that he is capable of.

I picked GM in the US Open.

Put me down for TW in The Open Championship.

Tiger has won his three Opens during spells of unseasonably pleasant weather, and has had some horror rounds in really bad conditions.  With the way TOC will set up I say he wins IF the wind doesn’t blow too hard, but it’s wide open otherwise.  Hopefully it’s gusty and we get to see TOC make these guys work for their money.

As a silly long odds bet I like Shane Lowry – he played a lot of amateur golf on links, and when he won the Irish Open at Baltray the weather was horrible.   Plus he’s just won his Open qualifying heat.

Tiger will be a huge favourite at The Open.

His record at St Andrews is played twice, won twice by a total of 13 shots.

There's room for him to hit it off line. The firm conditions will mean he can leave driver mainly in the bag.

The flattish, huge greens place a premium on lag putting.

If the weather is good, I think Tiger wins. Wind and rain are the only real things I can see stopping him.
