Tom:

To each his own -- the differences between the likes of a Ballyneal or Pac Dunes and Rock Creek are not worth the fuss.

Yes, the courses are built to the wishes of the client.

But the collective nature of the par-4 holes at RC is what really drives the engine there for me. One doesn't see the likes of a 7th, 8th or 16th holes in too many places.

Sad to say, ocean views add a few brownie points to any course.

Jim / Shivas:

#4 and #11 are both solid holes but I like #11 a bit better -- grest driging hole with the spine snd the way the green is angled.

Like I said -- I've played my share of Doak courses -- the collective par-4 holes at Rock Creek makes it for me. Have to say the uphill par-4 16th may be the toughest of them all there.

Shivas,

Rock Creek was just a more powerful "experience" for me than some other well known "experience" venues. I can distinctly remember my first rounds at Old Head and Pebble Beach.

As spectacular a place as Old Head is, the fact that there really were no interesting greens or bunker work stood out even more. The course came across as an architectural mistake; the amazing setting could't hide that.

At Pebble, nothing could distract me from the golf course either. I kept thinking "understand the golf course, play a smart shot".

Rock Creek just didn't allow me to  do that!

P.S.  Don't move Pine Valley.

Tim:

Old Head is bit better than you are describing -- I think of the course as six so-so holes -- six above average holes and six that are quite special.

"Architectural mistake."

To each his own.
