I miss him terribly Morgan, yet I will never forget his kindness, or the ardor his friends still have for him this day.

Here...in Mike's memory...here is the cross he designed for his church after they rebuilt after being destroyed by Hur4ricane Hugo.  Just like you can lose a church, but not lose faith, so to can you lose a man, but never lose what he meant to you.

I am wondering if there is a book or some great articles concerning his works as a golf course designer.

Germain,

I wouldn't necessarily use the word "great" in terms of the finished product, but I was among the last, possibly the very last, journalist to interview Mike Strantz..a few months prior to his passing, and after he lost his ability to speak, which made our time together all the more surreal.

This was for a chapter in my book "Golf Charms of Charleston," which featured not only a profile of Strantz, but also a course review of his Charleston beauty, Bulls Bay.  I don't want to waste bandwith by cut/pasting the 1,800 word feature here, but if anyone would like to see it, please IM me and I'll be happy to send it along.

Joel,

I would love to read it, and for some reason it wont let me IM you tonight.  If you dont mind drop me an email.  THanks

The first Mike Strantz course I ever played was Tobacco Road on a crisp November day in 2003.  At the time I was playing mostly municipal tracks because I was a newbie to the game of golf.  On that perfect November day, I was completely blown away with the aesthetics of the golf course and its design.  Tobacco Road may be the golf course that piqued my curiosity in golf course architecture.  From that day going forward I started to look at golf course architecture in a different light.  I definitely sought out every Mike Strantz design and tried to play each one.  Although I have not played his redesign at MPCC and Silver Creek or his original design at Bull's Bay, I can honestly say that every Mike Strantz course is unique and fun to play.  I think the greatest complement you can pay a golf course architect is repeatedly going back to play their courses.

Nice representation of Mike Strantz.

Who has done that Jay? Is it by Mike Strantz himself?

No...I'll get the artist's name, but that's Mike on his horse Degas flanked by Sophie (left) and Greta (right) overlooking the 18th green at Bulls Bay.

Jay,

The artist's name is D.J. Fitzgerald. We have the painting (I thought it was the original) at the entrance of our Mens Grill.

I hope to toast Mike's portrait with you some time next year...perhaps when I come out for the Open.
