Pete Dye's new course at Reynolds Plantation
« on: October 27, 2008, 09:20:54 PM »
Hadn't heard much on here about this so I thought would post. Interesting resort project at a time when the economy is so bad. The video says that the goal is to make the site walkable, which I can attest the other five courses are definitely not. The routing looks similar to the Engh course, but this one crosses the lake with a par-3 on the front. I'd like to work on this project after UGA's football season, so hopefully I can get hired and put some follow-up pictures of the ground plane site.

Here's the picture of the site - the 3rd, 4th, 12th area near the lake looks decent.

Also, the website at Reynolds has a video - shows the vegetation, but not much else. Really funny moment of Pete, Mercer Reynolds, and some other dude shoveling dirt in the middle of the woods for marketing  :D

Pat,
The architecture at Reynolds is less than inspiring, but it's a bad map for getting a sense of the home sites. They actually do a pretty good job of setbacks with tree screening.

#100 - Wooooohoooo

Adam,

Its funny how this all plays out in real estate development.  Two years ago we made a  decision we were going to try and get Pete Dye to design a course for us at Rarity Communities.  We had this 5,000 acre property in the mountains of Tennessee called Rarity Mountain and sure enough they liked it and it had great potential.  Pete Dye and P.B. Dye are working on this project together along with another project called Rarity Rivers.

Long Story Short - when you send out a press release your working with Pete Dye to build a course in the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee near Knoxville, The Cliffs answered that working with Tiger Woods at High Carolina near Asheville and now Reynolds Plantation is making a statement building a 6th course that is being designed by Pete Dye so that it is for walking.  Sounds like record skipping to me that is what The Cliffs said working with Tiger (he wants a course that is very nice and allows for walking because of his focus on wellness).

Regardless Mr. Dye will create another really nice golf course.  He is a unique character very talented designer a legend and Reynolds Plantation has very deep pockets so if they want to build something extreme and best of the best to compete with The Cliffs and Rarity Mountain they will spend the money and make it happen.

Do you think anybody will notice those homes when golfing?

I think the intrusiveness of the houses will depend on the model Reynolds follows.  At the Oconee course, the houses (many quite enormous) are set back into the woods on large plots of land and aren't really intrusive.  At Great Waters, in contrast, the houses are smaller (though not small!), have smaller lots, and seemed to sit a lot closer to the course -- IMHO, they were fairly intrusive.

From the number of lots on this map, it looks like they might be following the Great Waters model.

What is so interesting about the 4th that you see in this drawing?

Carl,
There not planning to build any kinds of houses as of now, so there could be an opportunity early on to see it pure golf b/c of the economy.

John,
Just guessing based the natural topography of the area, where a flat area will go from rolling hill to steep drops down to water in a short stretch, that the darker shaded area means four could be semi-blind or blind to a perched/banked/plateau area around the green. For a medium-length par-4 it would be interesting because Reynolds doesn't have many obstructed shots like that. Plus I like the closeness to the 3rd and 12th. Could be an opportunity for shared tees on the tips of 12 and 4. Reynolds also lacks grouping areas that aren't close to other holes. I like to watch others play golf.

I see. I had not noticed the differing colors on the drawing as indicating a plateau.

I like your tag line. Munson is just  not replacable. Those were some great times

Jonathan,
Tim Liddy is the project manager. I was told end of spring construction starts, but that may have changed.

GCA,

The Dye Course at Rarity Mountain project is not on hold we have only slowed down due to the cold winter weather in the mountains of Tennessee.  The golf course is all bent grass playing surfaces with bluegrass rough.  Back in December we started slowing down due to the cold, rain and snow during the months of December, January and February.

The golf course is 90% completed with only holes #13 (a short par 5) and #14 (a par 3) to touch up for final shaping and grassing to finish this spring.  The founder of Rarity Communities has spent two years and millions building this course working with Pete & P.B. Dye to create something really special that golfers will enjoy.

I will keep you all posted on our progress come spring finishing the course!

Lawrence,

Just wait and see how damn much fun The Dye Course at Rarity Mountain will be to play.  Its only 7,200 from the tips with five set of tees.  The last par 3 on the back 9 is #14 so you can hit driver the last four holes coming home with some really fun golf holes with risk reward on three of them #15, #16 and #17 with a traditional strong par 4 to close on #18 at 445 yards.

I can't wait for this summer to host GCA members that can visit and play the course!

Just to follow up on Rarity Mtn. I was at the development not long ago with the owner. Construction is slow, but only because the weather at 2,000 ft. in the Cumberland Mtns. dictates that it be slow during winter months. The course is nearly complete with the exception of parts of about 2.5 holes. I would venture that it will need a couple of months to mature and be ready for play early to mid-summer. Any holdup in opening will be because local officials are slow getting utilities installed.
The Mountain is going to be a spectaculat track, one of the best I've ever seen. Dye has built a course that could easily host a USGA event once the supporting facilities are built. Several of the holes run along the tops of the ridges with drop-off on each side into places only Trolls live. I can't wait to take Varney up on his invitation to play.
