Arizona Trip
« on: October 05, 2009, 05:00:13 PM »
So now that I am back in Palm Desert, CA, practically every golf course out here is in the overseeding process.  Don't worry though I got a good 7 rounds in at Stone Eagle before it closed for 40 days.  I am making a little trip out to Phoenix for a week to help my mother move into a different place in Scottsdale.  Though the Phoenix area has a TON of golf courses, I would say about 80% are still closed during the month of October for overseeding.  So I tried to set up some golf in the Phoenix area, but my options were very limited.  I called WeKoPa since the Saguaro course was still open, but they don't let any PGA out while they only have one course open, same story with Talking Stick.  I wanted to go to Apache Stronghold now that it is open again, but I found out today that they are closed on Monday and Tuesday, so I will give them another try once they are open on Wednesday.  If anyone has played there since it opened up again I would love a little feedback on whether it is worth going out there or not.

So far I have set up this little trip; I will post pictures of each course when I am done playing them.

Tues-  Chaparral Pines   (I am looking forward the most to this one, I have yet to play a Panks & Graham design and it will be nice playing in the cool weather up in Payson)d

Wed- Legend Trail GC (I have played here before a couple years ago, it is a pretty basic Rees Jones course, but always in good condition)

Thurs- Troon North Pinnacle (I haven't played here yet, a Weiskopf design.  I know the Monument gets all the credit, would like to hear people’s opinion on this course if it is any good)

Check on Southern Dunes.

Does it have a new name?  I played there a couple of years ago, pretty good course but a trek out there.

According to the Overseed Schedule produced by the SW Section of the PGA, Southern Dunes is not closing for overseed.  Probably your best shot in the desert for anything approaching F&F in October.

Southern Dunes changed its name to Royal Dunes a few years ago but has reverted back to SD since Troon Golf has taken over management and the course is now public.

Only tees will be overseeded for the prime season!!! Fast and firm rules here.  :)

It is a difficult time for sure!

I can confirm that Southern Dunes is not overseeding this winter, greens or fairways !

You might also check out Vista Verde, according to the SWPGA schedule, they started their overseed on Sept 7.   I think though, they are sometimes only open Thurs-Sun.

Enjoy your visit.

What's the temp difference in the summer (vs. Scottsdale or PS), and what's the overall season there?   Thanks!

The weather in Palm Desert and Scottsdale is about exactly the same throughout the whole year.  The only differences are that PD gets a lot more wind, but Scottsdale gets the late summer monsoons.  The town of Payson is at around 5,000 feet elevation and it is surrounded by pine trees, so it is much cooler.  It is perfect in the summer time and I am pretty sure it gets mild snow in the winter time.

I'd swap Legend Trail and Pinnacle for Southern Dunes and VV in a Scottsdale minute.

I think SD is one of the most underrated courses in the area...totally non-target desert golf, F & F, great bunkering with a dash of linksy quirk thrown in. No houses, your own private club (we almost had the place to ourselves in April) and a total bargain...definitely worth the extra 30-40 min drive.

VV has been extolled plenty here with good reason.

Have fun..

Haha, sorry about that Mr. Richardson.  I honestly had no clue you were even involved in that project, it say Rees Jones all over the place.  I played it two years ago in the summer with A LOT of beers in a friendly scramble, so I didn't get to really take in the course that much.  I will be playing it on Wednesday, so I will give you the update then with a full photo tour.
