11 at Interlachen
« on: August 16, 2009, 02:20:35 PM »
I saw Interlachen today (and Minikahda yesterday...I play White Bear tomorrow).  A player called 11 "the controversial hole."

Over trees and water to reach a shortcut on a short par-5.  To channel my inner mucci - discuss!  What say you?

For the record, Interlachen blew me away.  I liked the front nine, I absolutely loved the back.  My first impression is conflicted - I'm of two minds about it.  If you cut all the trees down, it might be too easy for the better player with not enough penalty for them, so the shorter hitter has no chance to keep up.  But if you leave the trees, there is risk as well as possible reward.  I need to chew on it a while.

Also for the record, I think Interlachen blows HazNat away.  it's not even close.

One last thing re HazNat:  Dan Jenkins on twitter said he had to ask a cow which farm they were playing:)  he also called it "charmless."

I think this is the greatest hole in the world.  I scored 2 on it once with seven witnesses.

Dan Jenkins also called Turnberry boring (and several other things) before the Open.  Perhaps it is, but it certainly produced a non-boring Open.

Jenkins was making a statement about how the course was in the middle of nowhere in 1970 if you want to keep the comment in context.

Jay, of all the courses in America's Top 100 on the Golf Digest list at the time, #11 at Interlachen and #13 at Augusta were the shortest par 5s.  This hole played as a par 4 with the tee up a smidge for the 1993 Walker Cup.

I'm not sure what the controversy is behind this controversial hole, but I suspect it is that the hole is very, very reachable...even for modest hitters...as a par 5 and the hole doesn't work (for me) as a par 4 because of the small landing zone and number of trees over the pond.

Think of this...wouldn't it be a cool modern par 4 with no trees over the lake and everything groomed as fairway?  Bite off what you want.  Personally, I think the hole works as is.

That's why I'm of two minds about it...I hate trees as a hazard, but iit works with them there.

Jay/John,     I played Interlachen, Minikahda, WBYC last week and my comments on the other thread regarding #11 were simply that the original routing was a very nice Cape hole that tempted the stronger player to bite more off the further right you go. The trees-silver maples were planted and the rest is history. We played the back tees and this played as a driver, 2hybrid for me and length is not my strength. This would be a very nice long par 4 if they took out the trees. Of the 3 courses Interlachen was definitely the hardest. They are all quite different though. WBYC was very sporty. Minikahda was stately. The 18th at Interlachen is as hard a finisher as there is.       Wish you well,  Jack

Lucky you!

M/SP is quite a place.  You could go back and do Golden Valley, Somerset, and a third (North Oaks, Oak Ridge, Minneapolis, Woodhill, Edina) and have just as good of a time.

It's been a heartwarming week.  These people are fantastic. So was the golf. So was the tournament.

There used to be a lot of trees in front of this pond too.  At that time you could barely see the pond from the tee.

It's obviously a much better hole now and certainly more daunting from the tee, now that that the pond is in full view.

Have fun at White Bear - it's a treasure!

Actually you still can't really see the water from the tee box...

Also here is a look from where your second shot is from if you take it over/through the trees on the corner.

On a side note, and sorry to burst John Conley's precious bubble, the caddy in this picture (from last summer) just so happens to have made a 2 on this hole 2 weeks ago with a 3 iron from 205 (uphill into the wind and not to far from where he is hitting in this picture).

As for it being the "controversial hole" it certainly is. 3 summers ago they changed it to a par-4 and adjusted the handicaps as such. They also created a new tee-box 30 yards left and 10 yards up from the current set of two tee boxes and took out 2 left green-side bunkers. The new tee even when they changed it to a 4 has yet to see too much playing time. It allows a better angle to take it over the corner it is still a tough drive because the trees catch so many balls.

A majority of the membership hated it as a par-4 because they really had/have no chance at getting on in two. Most drive it out there 220-250 and have 225+ uphill left. After a one-year "trial" it went back to being a par-5 but was now sans the 2 green-side bunkers. This summer they also changed the rough to the right of the right fairway bunker (in the picture with the caddy above) to fairway as well.

Ever since the one year trial as a 4 and then back to a 5 the debate has raged on and nary a round goes by without it being discussed when playing the hole. There is a strong faction of the membership (mostly the younger men and the better players) pushing to take down the five trees on the left in Jay's picture and shaving it down to fairway to make it a par-4. Everyone who wants it to happen believes that if they do that it will become the best par-4 in the state and make Interlachen even more of a championship golf course.

The latest development is that they have now made this hole a par-4 for the championship or black set of tee markers that mostly only the single-digit handicappers use. As it is changed on the scorecard it only affects the handicap ratings on the back-side and really is just a number on paper. Personally I think that the par-4 "wanters" will win out in the next year or two and take the 5 trees down but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Did you know World Woods has the best burger I've ever had in my entire life? I'm planning a trip back just for another one between rounds.
