Sources for golf course reviews by 'the common man'
« on: June 23, 2009, 09:28:04 AM »
Other than this site, I sometimes look at the golf course reviews on golflink.com.  Does anyone else have suggestions of websites with course reviews?  Not necessarily upper echelon courses-but ordinary courses too.  Golf Digest places to play is another source, but the reviews are just compilations of phrases, blurbs that are not necessarily accurate.

Not really much anymore, A.

I have, but only when researching areas for specific venues.

Here's one I just ran across in the course description section of their own website. Supposedly very exclusive and the only person to mention the area after using the search function... Sean Tully. So, you know it has to have a chance at being good.

This tree-lined course, situated between the Medicine Bow and Rawah Ranges, features fairly large greens. The signature hole is #18, a 190-yard, par 3, requiring a tee shot over a lake to a well-bunkered, undulating green. Hole #6, a 154-yard, par 3, offers a 360-degree mountain view from the tee box.

Any guesses on where? Anyone.

If you are a walking golfer then you may find the growing number of views on the walking golfer.com of interest.

Mine certainly do not hold a candle to anything you would find on gca.com but I try to add as many photos as possible so I think they are probably more interesting than the one paragraph and one photos you tend to get on golflink and some other sites.

Yelp is a good resource to look at. Admittedly some of the posts on sites are of questionable value.  I have found when traveling to an area I am unfamiliar with they provide at least some info.

Well, since folks are looking for views which don't necessarily conform to the GCA party line, I have one for yous.  Thew chap who runs the site is quite interesting and has his own special PoV which is highly commendable.  It will take time to build the site, but there is enough content now to with the promise of much more to keep me interested in checking back.

Wow.. I sure didn't recognize it from the descrption, but I have been to Fox Acres.. spent a weekend there once, played it like 5 times.  Note #18 is 190 from the short tees.. it's a killer 230 or something from the tippy-tips.. Colorado's answer to 16 Cypress.

Merits:  many.  Very quirky, very fun, many wild greens.  Incredible views throughout and fantastic conditions.

Shortfalls:  pretty much cartball and very expensive.

I've played Fox Acres, which is in the mountains NW of Ft. Collins, CO, many times. As Tom says it's quirky and fun. Originally owned (and maybe designed) by a single individual now a membership/vacation residential club (not sure how well it's doing these days). There's a replica green of ANGC's #14 that is really cool. Good fishing on the property too.

Thanks, I know that one.  Most of the reviews are pretty old though it seems.  A lot from 2001, some from 2004, not that many after that I think.

http://www.top100golfcourses.co.uk/htmlsite/uk.asp seems pretty good as these things go.  Just treat it like Olympic skating; ignore the best rating and the worst.
