One Round of Golf-I-77 Corridor-Virginia
« on: May 28, 2009, 10:28:13 PM »
Plans have been finalized for the Pinehurst 2009 jaunt.  Courses will range from the benign to the not-so-benign.  Tobacco Road, Tot Hill Farm, Southern Pines, The Pit and Little River.  We will play Tot Hill on a Thursday morn, then head back north along I-74 and I-77.  We'd like to stop somewhere in the B-R mountains in Virginia and play a golf course there Friday morning before completing the trek to Buffalo.  Any suggestions?  Thanks, colegas.

Coming in 2024

Virginia Tech's course is supposed to be pretty good.  It'll be after where 77 runs to 81.  Poplar Grove outside of Lynchburg is interesting, if you're up for a bit of a detour.

Heck, Vista Links in Buena Vista, VA is not far off of 81 and is inexpensive and pretty interesting.  You could hit up the Greenbrier or the Homestead too, potentially.

Draper Valley is just a few miles (about 20 minutes drive) up I-81 from the intersection of 81 and 77, and right on the highway.  It is a good golf course, very affordable, well-conditioned and generally not overcrowded.  Made one magazine's "Thrifty 50" list a few years ago.  I play there every July, and would recommend it.

If you are taking I-79 home, Stonewall Resort in Weston, WV, would be a good place to stop, very nice arnold palmer course in a mountain setting, I think it's on GD's top 100 public list.

You'll be within reasonable distance of Primland.  I'd make immediate and permanent plans to play it.

If not, The River Course at Virginia Tech is far more interesting than Draper Valley, but is 35 miles each way out of the way.  If you're willing to drive that, I'd go to Primland in a heartbeat.

Just played Tot Hill and Tobacco Road in February.  Both were in great shape and were, as usual, challenging.

Tim,

I am travelling down 29 next month and was thinking of trying Poplar Grove.  Can you give me some flavor of the course?

Thanks

Play Fincastle Country Club in Bluefield. It's right on I-77, and you won't be disappointed. It's private, but you shouldn't have any trouble getting on with a phone call. The people there are real nice and accommodating. It's a sporty Dick Wilson layout with one of the best sets of par 4's I've seen anywhere. The views are majestic and the conditioning is usually top notch if you're into that kind of thing. Fincastle is a true hidden gem.

I would wait until Daniels (Beckley) WV and play at Glade Springs (Cobb Course).

Cabell,

I believe I had way back in the day. Believe they actually had the WV Open there... Only WE could set up a state championship outside the state. Did Todd S win it there? Man that was a long time ago.

I always liked Glade Springs though. It is a fun course with a few interesting quirky holes (4,5,12,16)... just one of favorites in WV.

Greg,
I believe Fincastle has hosted a couple of WV Opens. I don't know if Todd Satterfield won it there, but I do know he grew up in Bluefield playing at Fincastle. I think the course itself straddles the state line, so technically I suppose one could argue that they played the event in the state.

I can't say I know anything about Glade Springs, but I'd be pretty surprised if it topped Fincastle. Not that Virginia has a lot of competition, but I put Fincastle in my personal top 5 for the whole state (Cascades, Kinloch, Boonsboro, CCV - River, Fincastle).

Sounds like Ronald has some options though.

Ballyhack does look interesting outside Roanoke, but that's over an hour from I-77.

Boonesboro??? WOW! Now you are taking me even further back. Played there in the Virginias vs. Carloinas Team Matches some 20+ years ago. Chiris Patton, Chalrie Rhymer, Tripp Isenhour... they smoked us pretty good.

Somewhat surprised you would have that in a top 5. Pretty cool course though.

I have two friends who tend to like dramatically different type courses. Both agree on one course; they thought Poplar Grove was a really nice surprise. On their word, my recommendation.

I notice every mention of Glade Springs is the Cobb course. Is the Ault course [Stonehaven] that bad, because it seems to be the more popular?

Do NOT go to Stonewall, that Palmer disappointment in WV. I have no idea how that became a Top 100, but it is far short of "Raven' at Snowshoe as a layout. OK, but certainly NOT a Top 100 worthy place.
Where is everybody? Where is Tommy N? Where is John K? Where is Jay F? What has happened here? Has my absence caused this chaos? I'm sorry. All my rowdy friends have settled down ......... somewhere else!

Meant to write Farmington...not sure how that happenned. I do think highly of Boonsboro though.

Doug, Personally have not played GS - Stonehaven as it was built long after I left the WV golf scene. That said all of my friends say the Cobb is superior and thus my mention of it.

In-season rates at Primland are $200, I believe.

I agree re Fincastle.....great golf course...never discussed.....yes todd Satterfield did win the WV Open or Am there and he did grow up there.  The other guy that lived there and played was Bob Denver(Gilligan).  Todd actually worked with me for about a year and has been the golf coach at Furman now for sometime.....
Play it.....

If you could work it, I would also say Primland.  Definitely worth the trip in my opinion.

This reminds me of being in the Mens locker room at the James River Club in Newport News. There  was a vigorous debate ongoing as to the most famous person to have ever played the course and it came down to a choice between Bob Denver and Lawrence Taylor.
