Yes... my sense is Macan was more concerned with bunker placement than style. He wrote about bunker placement, and was a big advocate of centrally located hazards. But, I've not read anything by Macan about bunker style(s).
While a bunker may be added or removed, here or there, I've not heard of a contemporary golf course designer devising a bunker scheme based on studying play over a new course, first. It's "instant effect" that sells these days. Leaving out bunkers doesn't help with first impressions of a new course in most cases!
