Coal Fly Ash as subsurface in GCA?
« on: February 12, 2009, 08:53:43 PM »
Given the large numbers floating around for remediation of the fly ash spill in Tennessee (500M$ or higher)
I would think that new or even old golf courses might get subsidies to take the stuff.

Would it be reasonable or cost effective to scrape surface soils, bury some elephants of fly ash and recover it with the original surface soils?

Joe,
Only if you could build the course where the CFA is, I don't think you'd get much backing to truck the stuff to some fairly pristine environment and use it as fill.
Then you have to convince players to stroll around on ...."arsenic, beryllium, boron, cadmium, chromium, chromium VI, cobalt, lead, manganese, mercury, molybdenum, selenium, strontium, thallium, and vanadium, along with dioxins and PAH compounds".

Don't even THINK of licking your balls.  ;D

I have canine tendencies.  I still have most of my teeth...

I worry less about the subsurface than I do about the growth regulators, fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, wetting agents, and all those other topical applications.

I think you could build golf courses around most of the coal burning power plants without problems.

I think Bayonne in New Jersey used a lot of fly ash:

I think fly ash as a subsurface element of golf courses might be a great use and should be encouraged.

Even Hillbillies are smart enough to know that you don't want this stuff anywhere near where you work, live or play.
