Mountain Golf, which are the best?
« on: May 29, 2002, 05:16:18 PM »
I just stayed at Panorama Resort in the interior of British Columbia, and really enjoyed playing Greywolf Golf Course while I was there. There are two really enjoyable things unique to mountain golf. First, the elevation changes on and off the course have you constantly looking all around, rather than fully concentrating on the course. Second, the opportunity to hit into a backdrop (instead of sky) allows you to easily follow the entire flight of the ball.

My favourite mountain courses are unfortunately limited to Canada (assuming Gleneagles doesn't really count)
Capilano
Greywolf
Jaspar Park (not open yet this year)
Banff (not open either)
Cape Breton Highlands (sort of a mountain setting)

Which have you played and would recommend seeing?

Ian,
The obvious addition for me is the Cascades.  In the same league as Banff and Jasper, though I might put both Banff and Jasper ahead of it.

I do not really think Highlands is a true mountain course, but it is above the other three in my opinion.

I think Jasper is the best I have seen, but I have not seen Capilano.

How do the two compare for you?

Capilano has some terrific holes, but the site is so severe that the holes are not collectively as strong as Jaspar. Capilano is on the side of a mountain whereas Jaspar is set in a huge bowl between mountains. The view into Vancouver from the first, 5th and 6th holes is stunning. The climb back up on the back side is very difficult. The bunkering at Capilano is more like Banff than Jaspar. Jaspar is wider and more receptive, which suits the fact it is a resort course. All the drainage work and conditioning improvements at Capilano have overcome some of the short-comings of the past.

Haven't played many mountain courses, I guess, so I'll add
my two cents as Cascades, Broadmoor, and Lookout Mountain.

I've always thought that a mountain course was located in the mountains and also had some elevation changes associated with it. If comtngolf is referring to the same Jackson Hole course I played, it was as flat as a month old glass of beer.

If you are in New England, don't miss Ross's Panorama course at the Balsams in New Hampshire.

Has anyone played Ross's Linville in N. Carolina. Is it worth some consideration?

Are the three mentioned above in the same area? I would be interested in heading down if this is the case.

My favorite mountain courses are in no paticular order:

Shady Canyon-Dr. T. Fazio
La Habra-Westridge-Damian Pascuzzo
Lost Canyons (Shadow and Sky)-Perry Dye
Tijera Rejada-Bob Cupp
Ocean Trails-Perry Dye
Cascades-Bob Cupp
Black Gold-Art Hills
Pelican Hills (Ocean North and South)-Dr. T.Fazio

Wait a second! I thought you were talking "mountain goat" courses!

Sorry!

Also in New England is the course at Sugarbush in Warren Vermont.  Have not played it since the mid 80's but it was a fun mountain type course.  Any one else played it recently.

Grandfather, Elk River, and Linville are all in Western North Carolina. Linville was designed by Ross, and D Eger says it is one of the greatest mountain courses in the world.

Ian:

Elk River, Grandfather, and Linville are quite near each other.
Elk River (Nicklaus) and Grandfather (Ellis Maples) are private.
You can play Linville if you stay at the Easeola Lodge, which I enthusiastically recommend.  I heard that Bobby Weed was retained to "restore" Linville. I have no knowledge of the status of that project, but you should inquire before making the trip.  It is not real close, but I also recommend Roaring Gap (Ross), also private. You will rarely play two courses that are more fun than Linville and Roaring Gap.
