The Ten Commandments
« on: November 19, 2008, 07:14:53 PM »
First let me say, after being an avid reader for years, how nice it is to discuss this thing we love with such a knowledgeable and enthusiastic group as this.

I wonder, are there ten "laws" of golf architecture/design that any group of conoscenti could agree on at this point in time?  From the major to the mundane.  Or do they simply not exist?....it is art after all.

Dr Mac came back from the dunes and had on grey stones:

1) Greens are the key to greatness, put your mind on it
2) Bunkers are character, make them elegant
3) Contours are variety, trust them
4) Site is your friend, be inspired by it
5) Uniqueness is what you are searching for
6) Restrain will stand the test of time
7) Length has an evil twin, be careful with it
8) Angles will provoke doubt in the sharpest mind
9) Fairways are there to be played, make them wide

10) You won't get anywhere in this business without alcohol

1. Only professional singers should sing in public.

Please tell everyone your profession and welcome to the Treehouse.

You make three by my count...  Lloyd Cole, Mark Rowlinson would be the others.
Are there more?

Cheers
Thinking of Bob, Rihc, Bill, George, Neil, Dr. Childs, & Tiger.

You're a singer, not the actor, right?
Can you sing in a good Neopolitan accent?   ;D 8) 8)

Yes, yes, I am a professional singer.....right now I'm in an artist development program shared between the Met and Juilliard, but I'll will emphasize: it's just my job.  It does however allow me a lot of travel and time at a lot of special golf courses (not today, I'm home and its 35 degrees  :-[)

And I think my father and grandfather would be ashamed if a Coppolo couldn't sing Neapolitan, "catari, catari, pecche me dicesti parole a mare pecche........"

Mike, are Lloyd and Mark singers?

I feel that way about my golf game when it leaves me, sometime.

Oh Boy, Pietro Pallotta, with Nunzio and me, we have a paisano 4some at the next GCA get-to-gether!

A summary of Mackenzie's 13 guidelines slimmed down to 10 by some web article that I have forgotten.  It would be interesting to read any proposed edits to this list:

1. The greens and fairways should be undulating, but without steep hills for the golfer to climb.
2. There should be a minimum of blind approach shots
3. The emphasis should be on natural beauty and not artificial features
4. There must be a complete absence of annoyance caused by searching for lost balls.
5. Course conditioning must remain consistently outstanding.
6. Every hole should have a different character.
7. There should be a sufficient number of heroic carries from the tee, but for the weaker player, with the loss of a stroke, they shall always have an alternative route.
8. There should be infinite variety in the strokes required to play the various holes.
9. The course should be so interesting that even the high handicapper shall be stimulated to attempt shots he has previously been unable to play.
10. The course should be arranged so that the low handicap player or absolute beginner should be able to enjoy their round, in spite of the fact they are piling up a big score.

Here's my list.....

1.   Thou shalt rout a course to best fit the existing landscape
2.   Thou shalt preserve as many stunning natural features as possible
3.   Thou shalt build artificial features which appear as natural looking as possible
4.   Thou shalt select a turf grass blend well-suited to the climate
5.   Thou shalt attempt to build a "fast and firm" golf course
6.   Thou shalt start at the greens and work backwards
7.   Thou shalt build hazards which are fearsome and intimidating
8.   Thou shalt make the golf course playable for all classes of golfers
9.   Thou shalt make the golfer think over every shot
10. Thou shalt have a varied mix of long and short holes
What does it matter if the poor player can putt all the way from tee to green, provided that he has to zigzag so frequently that he takes six or seven putts to reach it?     --Alistair Mackenzie--

*Thou shalt be forgiven should you commit a sin of ommision of these 10 commandments if ye be hampered by ye olde owner/client.  ;D

Lots of good ones, thanks.

Adam - you capture that unique style of commandment-language very nicely.

RJ - sounds like a wonderful idea. Even if we play crap golf, we'll eat great afterwards. I'll bring the prosciutto and reggiano cheese...

Does Lloyds of London sell bad GCA insurance inoder to plan for rainy days?  If so, they probably have a rider on the policy excluding any coverage for devestating costs due to drainage/maintenence failures of things like delluges.  ;D

I'll bring the wine...
Then we'll really have an excuse for poor play.
