I just do not understand how people cannot be in a "mental state to walk 18 holes."  What does that even mean?  You do not have to run.  You do not have to endure forced physical pain.  It is a walk in the park for three hours, if you play the game correctly.  If not, then why do real golf clubs want them there?  I just do not see cart golf as real golf, like some people on this site.

JNC:  If you came over and saw America, you would understand.  Most of our population now is so out of shape from eating poorly and working odd hours and never exercising, that a lot of them are in no shape to walk 18 holes.  They make an exception for Bandon Dunes, but after walking 36 holes in one day for the first time in years (or maybe their lives), the lounge area in front of the fireplace in the main bar looks like a triage unit at the hospital!

And if only our golf course architects can convince you English losers that cart paths are necessary, in twenty years you lot could be just as out of shape as we are!  ;)

That's why I am trying to tell Adrian not to take the bait.  I have seen it myself in Scotland -- golf helps keep older people in good health, as long as golf carts are out of the picture.  Once they become the norm, your country will deteriorate as quickly as ours did.

I am from America, actually! :)  I am over in London for the semester.  The style of golf is refreshing over here.

I know there are plenty of out-of-shape Americans.  However, I also work at a golf course during the summers.  There are plenty of people there that are capable of walking 18 holes.  Yet they take carts routinely or exclusively.  To me, that means that they are either lazy or simply do not have respect for the traditions of the game.

Tom,
I'm not defending out of shape Americans, but when you compare populations (as you did) I'm not sure we eat more poorly or exercise less than our counterparts in the UK ??? ???

I'm with Jeff. I've not spent near as much time in the UK as you guys but enough to see plenty of pudgy couch potatoes who eat fried stodge three meals a day.

Just like those guys Tom sees walking golf courses in Scotland there are guys in my club here in South Carolina who, at age 65, can walk rings around me any day. But they've been walking the golf course two or three times a week for decades just like those Scotsmen. Nothing whatsoever to do with the 90% of the population that never comes close to walking for 10 minutes at a stretch, golf course or otherwise.

There's a family up the street from me who shuttle their elementary-age grandchildren in a golf cart between their home and the city park at the end of the block...a total distance of less than 250 yards. I'm pretty sure the golf cart ride is the best part of the day for those kids. Americans have a cultural belief that anything worth doing is worth adding an internal-combustion engine to.

I also loved Tom Doak's way of playing Crystal Downs - walk the front nine, but take the cart up the hillier back nine.  Sometimes, we need to think something other than all or nothing!

The one round I played at Crystal Downs, we had three walkers and one rider.  I was very happy to ride from 11 to 12 tee.  Otherwise it is a great walk with a few hills along the way - #6, #8, #17.

Niall,

You nailed it. If there were no cart paths, how would the beverage cart girls know where to go?
