4th best course in the neighborhood!
« on: October 25, 2008, 04:59:22 PM »
A couple views of a really fun course.  Since, the obscure club entrance picture was so easily indentified.  There is no reason to name this course, the clue is in the title.

Just played southampton CC on Tuesday and thought it was an awsome course. I was a little disappointed the first few holes because we went there right from NGLA so it was not on that level but I had to get past that and I really enjoyed the course.
Is it true that they are going to restore the course?

I am willing to give Sebonac the nod as 3rd best.  As for a restoration of Southampton, I have not heard anything.  However, they happen to have a couple of very classic golf course knowledgeable members.  So a future restoration would not be very surprising.  Today, I did hear something from a great source that the USGA wants a couple of greens to be modified at Sebonac for the Open.

Southampton GC hired a new super last year and the changes with regard to green expansion, incorporation of chipping areas in green surrounds and maintenace practices which have restored the firmness not only to the greens but in the entry ways to the greens have been dramatic.

Many of the areas around greenside bunkers have been shaved down in a similar manner to those of surroundings found at NGLA and Shinnecock allowing the presnt contours to send your ball to a slow death if slightly mishit.

Greens always were considered the best in the Hamptons until about 15 years ago and have now been firmed up to even better standards than before and have been playing with the same challenge found at its more famous neighbors.

What a difference a year makes.

I now look forward to playing here as much as any other course in our area and, in most cases, even moreso.

Restoration of the bunkering is always a topic of discussion and several recent informal course architecture meetings of about 50 members have presented aerials from '38, '47. '60, '68 and included walking tours of the course pointing out the changes made over the years and proposals for restoration. Brian Silva also drew up a master plan for the club to follow once approval has been made by the membership as a whole.

Matt,

I assume you mean 1 and 2, because 3 and 4 can certainly be mentioned as "best back to back long 4's in The Hamptons" and have a legitimate chance of winning said contest. Unfortunately you can't see the contours of the land from above, but Robert's photos show some of it.

If my neighbourhood was, let’s say St Andrews or even Fife I wonder where to start? Think I’ll stay out of this as I believe I am spoilt for choice as you are only looking for 4th position.

Robert that is very unfair and impossible choice for me. I would say it was – No, no, perhaps… No, maybe… No, then what about ….

Sorry decided to go out shoe shopping with my wife – that is going to be slightly easier – I think.

I just played Southampton for the first time along with  Westhampton and Noyac and enjoyed them all.  Southampton, Shinny, National, and Sebonac are all lined up and maybe someone can show just how close they all are to eachother.   From what I understand it costs almost nothing to join Southampton, but there is something like a 200 person waiting list.  What a great bargain considering Sebonac is up to $1 million.  The front nine at Southampton is really terrific with the 2 fantastic difficult par 4.s already mentioned, a cool horsehoe green par 3 and a wonderful driveable par 4...... the course is not to be missed is you can line it up.

I really enjoyed Southampton last week when I played there.  It seems like the course could be a true gem if they restored the bunkers and reclaimed all that old green space.

This course would be the best course in almost every other neighborhood.
I have always loved this course since the 1989 US Open qualifier.  I really think that the third is the coolest version of double plateau among the Raynor's.
