Picture in Cypress Point Locker Room, Barker? (Pic Added)
« on: October 01, 2008, 05:51:33 PM »
I noticed a very large picture hanging in the locker room at CPC that I meant to post about and forgot.  It had four folks standing in the 18th fairway:

Alister Mackenzie
Marion Hollins
and
H.H. Barker

Did I look at the picture wrong?

Is there any way Barker could have been at CPC when it was being built?

Is there another guy named Barker that could have been with MacKenzie?

Did I just misread the name?

I have no ulterior motive here, I just thought about GCA when I saw the name Barker on the picture and wondered what his involvement might have been at CPC.  The picture was probably taken in 1927-1928.

Note: I just noticed the same picture (I think) is on the cover of The Life and Work of Alister MacKenzie.

The guy beside Hollins.

Not quite Chip. Think you simply misread it.
Pictured from left are Mackenzie, Hollins, H.J. Whigham and Robert Hunter. No sign of a Barker anywhere, not even a dog.

Chip,
That picture shows up in Geoff Shackelford's "Alister MacKenzie's Cypress Point Club" on page 16. It lists Alister MacKenzie, Marion Hollins, H.J.Whigham and Robert Hunter.
It is on cover of "The Life and Works of Dr. Alister MacKenzie and on page 110. It identifes same group but Whigham is spelled Wigham.

Thanks. Sorry I had Baker and Whigham confused.

That is certainly one of the most interesting locker rooms anywhere. I have a few pics I may figure out how to post. The simplicity and complete understatement of the locker room in relation to the magnificence of the course and the mystique of the place is quite amazing.

To divert this thread only slightly, the thought of Cypress Point's locker room must make Forrest Richardson smile, as his excellent, evocative map of the course has pride of place there.

Didn't know Forrest did a map of Cypress Point; can anyone post it?

The drawing that Forrest prepared for Cypress Point is very impressive.  I have a smaller signed version and could scan it and post it but I will leave that to Forrest.  I didn't know he had such interest in classic golf courses   ;)

Mark, from what I've seen of the few Forrest courses I've played (and enjoyed) -- Las Palomas, Wigwam Gold, Peacock Gap -- Forrest gets classic and applies classic to modern golf design.

Forrest is holding back on us :-)

Paging Forrest!  Map please.

 Chip,

Maybe hold onto those locker room pics if you ever want to get invited back...

Patrick-

That picture I included was just cut and paste off of the book cover...not a picture from inside the locker room.  I am not that stupid!

I saw Forest's drawing as well....very cool.  He should be proud!  I wish I had a copy to hang on my wall.

Has anyone read the "In My Opinion" piece that speculates that was C.B. in drag and not Marion?

Could that explain the "glory shot" attempt on the 16th that cleared the decision for Alister to build it?

Bill,
Forrest definitely gets it!  I was just pulling his chain as he does to me all the time when we are on site together.

Actually, I believe that snivelling toady "Wimp" Whigham was sent there on Macdonald's direct orders to steal back Raynor's plans before Mackenzie could co-opt them.

I wouldn't be surprised if that 15-minute-man Barker was in on it, as well.  ;)   ;D

I'd love to see a picture of the CPC locker room and also SFGC.  Dreams are such nice things.

Forrest's Cypress Point plan is in his "Routing the Course" book which is a worthy reference and interesting study of a lot of good info.

If anyone is interested in a framed copy, Forrest's wife, Valerie, runs a small business selling framed course layouts including this CPC drawing.  You can email her at valerie@golfgroupltd.com.  I'm sure Valerie will be happy to email the plan and sell you a framed print (at a surprisingly reasonable price) if interested.

You can usually find one of the prints on eBay. Valerie has 2009 plans for a website for Golframes, but it has taken a back seat. I suggest you search eBay for Cypress and I will ask her to make sure she keeps a print up for anyone to see.
