;D Planning on making a sojourn to the prairies of NE from my humble abode in Winter Park, CO. Just curious if anyone has played Bayside Golf Club or Heritage Hills. Also curious if Sand Hills is amiable to letters of introduction if you belong to a private club offering reciprocal play? We're planning on playing Wild Horse, hoping to play Sand Hills, and considering playing Bayside and Heritage. Thanks again ;D

I am 99.9% certain Sand Hills is "play with a member only", no letters of introduction, no reciprocal, but I am sure as heck not one who would know this for sure, being the humble guest that I am.   ;) Wild Horse is WONDERFUL - don't miss that - start working now on the putts from 50 yards off the green.  Bayside is indeed supposed to be very cool - don't miss that either (I did and it's the only tiny regret from my trip to NE - my own fault - didn't allow enough time).  Allow about 4 hours for drive from Winter Park to Gothenburg. No knowledge re Heritage Hills.  Enjoy!

ps - any thoughts on Fox Acres?  Given your moniker you ought to know it... I may be playing there Labor Day.  Seems VERY short for a mountain course...

Played Sand Hills, Wild Horse and Heritage Hills (as well as Colbert Hills in Kansas and the Harvester in Iowa) on a 2000-mile trip across the prairie last summer and would recommend playing Wild Horse twice (or more) and skipping Heritage Hills. Pretty goofy. We stepped off the 18th green and my buddy said, ``That was like playing in a giant mixing bowl.'' You go down, you come up. You go down, you come up...you go down, you....well, you get the idea.... I suspect it was great when it opened in 1984, but can't compare now to something like Wild Horse. Sand Hills was heaven and, even after a recent trip to County Down, Portrush, Ballybunion, Ballyliffin, etc., is still No. 1 on both our life lists, but Wild Horse is pretty damn good. Different, more subtle, but wonderful just the same. Stay out of the wooga...As for getting on Sand Hills: As far as I know, you need to know a member....

If you approach Heritage Hills without any pre-concieved notions, it is as good a municipal course as any in the country, and way better than most. The friendly atmosphere, reasonable green fee combined with some awesome terrain makes for some great golf on the same Sandy ground prevalent in  parts of NE. I have not been there in 10 years but when I missed it in 92's "places to Play" I correceted that mistake and was not disapointed.

Its now tough to get on Sand Hills.  You have to be with a member.  Jim Kidd the pro since day one has left (does anyone know where he went) and Dick Youngscap is running the show.  Its my understand they are under some pressure regarding the ADA and as a result playing by the rules.

My humble opinion about bayside is two distinct nines, front 9 from the tips a shorter WHorse, the back 9 has some long carries with some tough greens to hit.  All in all it is definitely worth the time to play, great clubhouse for a beer.  McCook, http://www.mccookgolf.com/ Is a great Muni and would be fun to play, but if you are headed to Colorado, I would stay along I-80.  If you are going through Omaha, you might try Quarry Oaks http://www.quarryoaks.com/.

Just got back from another trip to Nebraska. Beyond the above recommendations, I'd check out the newly opened ArborLinks GC in Nebraska City, 45 miles southeast of Lincoln and 40 miles south of Omaha.

It's still a little rough in spots, but an interesting environmental project, with loads of re-established prairie grasses and some tough carries across wetlands. Bunkers are overly elaborate, but the hotel there at Arbor Day Farms is pretty cool and worthwhile, esp. for a non-golfing spouse.

Jason recommends I-80, I recommend going just a little south into Kansas and take Hwy. 34 into or from denver. I have been known to do 100 mph for 2 hours on that empty road. It is worth the trip to McCook.

I played Quarry Oaks last year and found it to be good golf. I cannot attest to the GCA architecture test for i only played it once. But it was in good shape had alot of good golf holes, had a nice flow and balance to it, well run and was on a very pretty piece of land overlooking the Platte River.

I haven't played it since I hit the opening shot at grand opening.  I visited a few times since, and it changed hands at least once, so it  has generally been in average condition.  If you have played it (I can't tell from your post), I would appreciate an update!

We built it for $1.2M in about 1989, a bargain even then.  We didn't move much earth, so it is a lay of the land design.

Hi Jeff,
I played Woodland about 4 weeks ago and it was in great shape.
The course has matured beautifully since '89 (I played that day too) and to get around in par or anywhere close you must play lots of good golf shots.  Most of the home sites are filled in now and they're basically done.  It's not too intrusive either until 17/18 IMO.
I like the rhythm of the routing too with tough stretches, like 6-8, followed by birdie opportunities at the drivable 9th (a fun hole) and 10/11.  Later you've got a tough stretch at 12-14, but it's followed by back-to-back par-5's, one against and one downwind.
Toughest Greens:  #13 & #18.
I'd recommend WHills to anyone on this site.  You'll probably lose a couple ball but have fun doing it.

:) Jeff - I've had the pleasure of playing Woodland Hills a few times on trips through the Midwest... A great routing in excellent condition smack dab in the vast land... Great work. Can't wait to play the Quarry in Biwabik, MN next summer?  :) Anyone have any idea of how the Quarry in Omaha compares to Woodland Hills? Looking forward to playing Wildhorse, and if anyone out there knows a member at Sandhills with a big heart, give me a shout!  ;D ;D ;D
