I have to be in LA next week and it looks like I'll be free Thursday until a 2:20pm flight out of LAX.  Is Rustic the obvious choice to try to play, or is that implausible given its distance to the airport and the possibility of traffic?  Are there other good options closer to the airport?  (The only courses I've played in LA are the Pelican Hill courses in Newport.)  Thanks in advance, and if anyone is interested in playing, please send me a PM.

Keep in mind that Rustic Canyon is 50 miles from the airport.

If you get the earliest tee time - I think it's 6am - you can get finished in 4 hours.  That gives you 4+ hours to get to the airport, return the rental, and get through security. Be careful not to get behind even a small tourney at RC for they usually take 5+ hours.

Do not underestimate LA traffic. In any other world 50 miles should not take more than an hour particularly after the morning commute. But due to neverending construction, inevitable accidents and inane carpool lanes you cannot predict an accurate ETA for LAX. Be sure to take the 118 East to the 405 South for the quickest route.

Security can also be a nightmare. Depending on the terminal, it can be an hour plus...

Thanks.  At 6am, I sure hope I can play in less than 4 hours! 

Are there other good alternatives closer to the airport than Rustic's 50 miles?

Probably nothing that's not a muni and therefore impossible to get a time on - courses like Rec Park, Rancho Park, Los Verdes come to mind but all are typically swamped.  Rec Park is about 30 miles, Los Verdes and Rancho Park are more in the 10-15 miles range, and of those Rec Park is your best bet at getting a game.

Don't know if you are playing alone, but I don't think a single can get a tee time at Rustic Canyon.

All architects will be a lot more comfortable when the powers that be in golf finally solve the ball problem. If the distance to be gotten with the ball continues to increase, it will be necessary to go to 7,500 and even 8000 yard courses.

Negatory - Open play is only allowed on Mondays and Tuesday through Thursday (or maybe Friday) outside play is only permitted after 1 or 2pm.

You could most likely get on Angeles National that early. It is a pretty good course up on the 210 in sylmar, it is much closer than Rustic although not as close as some of the other mentioned.

If money is no object, Trump International is a possibility, great views, although a wacky course. Not that far from LAX and probably easy to get on early morning.

Carl, if you can get out early, you should have no problems getting to LAX in time from Rustic. As far as public access (and even most privates in the area) there is Rustic Canyon, and then everything else.

As others have stated, RC is the place to play if you're in the LA area. That is if you don't have access to the privates...

I'd forget about Malibu CC. It's not worth the effort it takes to get there from LA. Trump's an option but it's way overpriced for what you get. Getting a time at the other LA publics you'd want to play is unlikely.

I just took a look at the available tee times at RC for the 31st. As of right now the earliest times are available. You need at least a twosome to reserve at RC though. Let me know if you need a partner or two for a group.

Thanks very much for the info.  At this point, I'm not sure it's worth hauling my clubs across country for one round, or renting clubs to play at 6am, but if I start getting the itch, I'll send you a PM.

Don't forget that 6am in LA is 9am in your mind.  The drive to Rustic from the airport is a blast and well worth the effort.  If I were you I would have zero qualms about renting clubs and playing an early morning round.  All you need is a hybrid and putter to have fun at Rustic.

Please note:  I live on eastern time myself and flew out of LA yesterday at 12:45 LA time.  The airport was empty and if I had to wait until 2:20 with nothing to do the boredom would have killed me.  I'd play Rustic at 6am, stop by either the Getty or Reagan Library and arrive at the airport around 1.

The Getty is fantastic, worth multiple trips.  The Reagan worth it mainly if you're ticking off a list of presidential places.  Better than the Nixon though!

Critically, the In-n-Out is within a mile of the Hertz.

Thanks John and Mark.  The last thing I want to do is be awake at 4am w/ nothing to do; if I don't play golf, I'll certainly find something else to do, and agree that the Getty is terrific (never seen the Reagan Library).

The only reason I would go to the Reagan Library is because it is in view of Rustic.

Great advice. The Getty is great. Their collection is worth every effort to see. And the view from there isn't too shabby either.

Getty Villa in Malibu needs an advance ticket.  You gotta love museums where the buildings are the stars.  Note:  I have never been to either but do enjoy the drive by each.

Sepulveda Blvd. 0.81 miles to be exact.  Walking distance anywhere but LA.  Backup in event of peak-load tourist infestation is Hollywood Park location down the road -- grimily tourist proof.

Even if your not a fan of Reagan, having an actual Air Force One inside the museum is worth the price of admission.  At least for me it was.
