The quote above talks about the greatest duel, but not about his favorite major which still is the Masters.

Richard,

Seems like Tiger has a different view ????

"The British Open is my favorite major," the American world number one said in his monthly newsletter.

"My first was at St. Andrews so it doesn't get much better than that," he added, referring to his Open debut as an amateur in 1995 when he tied for 68th.

"I just love the history, tradition and atmosphere. You need patience and imagination to play well, plus the fans are great. I'm really looking forward to next week."

Alfie

Melvyn,

To answer the original thread question ; YES ! Absolutely !

But you have to remember - there are nutters in all walks of life and "we" sensible chappies must inevitably bump into a few along the way.  ;D
People are fickle - even a few golfers !

I must say, that sometimes you do come across as a little aggressive ? Brilliant ! That's your passion (IMO) and you should never lose that. The contributions you've made to this site, thus far, have been interesting and informative, and for the most part - original. I'm impressed, to say the least ! I firmly believe that.....you get it, Melvyn, unlike so many who don't !

Now. THE OPEN ? "THE" Open is still the one IMO. And for all the reasons you've previously stated. Anyone who opines otherwise is clearly living and viewing the golfing world from  their own little goldfish bowl !

I wonder why it is, that thousands upon thousands of golfers (and non golfers) worldwide, possess an insatiable desire to make the pilgrimage to St Andrews and Scotland, at least once in their lifetime ?

Augusta and the US Open are fantastic too - but they diminish as time and technology rolls on. THE Open can still hold it's head above the water (and above the other Majors) , but only just ? That's just progress - so they say - and you can't turn the clock back ? So they say ?

They once said - that the world wasn't round....so they said ? ;)

Keep on posting mate, and enjoy watching why THE Open is the greatest of them all. IMO, of course.

Alfie.

I cherish my visits to St Andrews and rounds on the Old Course as among the most memorable of my life.  I really wouldn't trade anything for those experiences.

This may sound heretical to many Americans, but I would rather play the Old Course and hang out in St Andrews - or East Lothian, or Dornoch - than Augusta.  That's just me.

But to try to rank the majors is a pretty fruitless exercise.

Nobody says, "Jack Nicklaus won three British Opens, six Masters, two U.S. Opens and six PGA's," they say, "Nicklaus won 18 majors."

Tiger Woods now has 14 majors.  Again, not three (British) Opens, etc.

The relative value of each of the majors has become equal because of the value of the total.  That's how the "greatest player of all time" is established, for better or worse.

Can we all agree that at least the PGA stinks?

You and Richard need to talk with Tiger first:

Tiger's Take on 2000 PGA: "The fireworks started on the back nine. This is probably one of the greatest duels I've ever had in my life. Hats off to Bob. He played his heart out.''

doesn't the PGA have the strongest field of all the majors?

if they only took it back to match play..
199 played, only Augusta National left to play!
