Caution: Unashamed Plug
I'm contemplating a purchase of a new set of irons, so, last weekend, Nancy and I took a spin around the county to various outlets from pro shops, big retailers, our golf pro and so on eventually ending up in St Andrews.
Just outside the town in the wee village of Largoward we stopped at the aforementioned company premises.
I've never been in before, but I most certainly will be again. It is MAGICAL! Six men good and true employ ancient skills and modern machinery in the manufacture of wonderfully accurate replicas (VERY playable!) of clubs, balls and bags. They also have the rights to the old 'George Nicoll' name - which any scottish golfer of a certain vintage knows and loves. Even a very young chap like me had one or two Nicolls in the bag as a youngster.
The young fellow who showed us around was just a gem. He was so enamoured of the place as a child that he spent all his time there - eventually just being told: "You spend so much time here, we might as well give you a job"!!!
The smells and sights of hickory and persimmon, of enamels, leather and brass polish are heavenly. The racks of beautiful clubs a sight for sore eyes. They make the set of Bobby Jones clubs which you may have seen in Auchterlonies is you've been in St Andrews. (Two and a half grand! - but gorgeous!)
I am so sorry that I hadn't known about the place before BUDA as I most certainly would have insisted on a visit.
Any GCAers coming to Fife are HIGHLY recommended to swing by the place (and to maybe buy a wee memento or two).
