Balsams Panorama Course Reopening in 2018?

The Ross-designed Panorama Course at The Balsams Resort in northern NH has been a NH favorite of mine since I first played it some years ago. The resort and the course have been closed for a number of years, with various redevelopment plans in the offing but never coming to fruition.

Out of curiosity I googled The Balsams and came upon thebalsamsresort.com, which led to several links to newspaper stories dated in August. A distillation of the stories is that, pending final governmental and financing approvals, redevelopment construction may begin this October, with reopening of the resort to take place in either late 2018 or 2019. Specifically as to the course itself, the State of New Hampshire is awaiting the above approvals before moving ahead with work on the road to the course. The course is currentlily being maintained in a manner that it would be able to be reopened before the end of 2018.

I looked up the course two years ago when I was touring New England for The Confidential Guide, to see if it was open for play or if it was going to reopen, and found much the same story ... with earlier dates.


In truth, I think they are still looking for money from government and private sources, and not finding it.

Well they clearly have money for online advertising! After googling their website, The Balsams ads are following me all over the internet :)

I have really pleasant memories of a week spent at the Balsams with my family when I was very little. I think my first round of golf outside CT might have been on their nine-hole Coashaukee course with my dad; I must've been 7 or so.


Those big, old-time resorts have a certain charm, and I hope the Balsams gets her groove back soon. And I hope the course gets the sort of restoration it deserves.
