After that he told them to shove it and he went over and started GMGC but before that could be done he joined the Navy in WW1 and then had the distinction of being on the first US ship the Germans sunk in WW1. Even that was pretty amazing as his ship was right at a beach in France when the Germans sunk it. He was apparently already off it on the beach and he apparently told the assembled Krauts that he thought that was pretty freaking rude and uncivil and if they ever asked him to serve on one of their golf committees he would patently refuse!
