I'm just going to work off the assumption that you are mocking Ryan with that drawing...

Look at all those square bunkers...that's hillarious! The round one, just half in the left side of the picture sure looks out of place...unless that's actually the entire bunker...

Jim,

The beauty of that bunker and its companion is that the golfer doesn't realize how square they are from the tee... considering they're about 20 feet above you. Very little of the squareness is apparent from the ground really.

And no, not mocking Ryan - maybe baiting him a bit, but I do have a serious point.

"#7 at Shinnecock may be my favorite looking par 3"

JES - is that partly because, just partly I'm saying, it's a hard golf hole that LOOKS like a hard golf hole?

I don't think that's it at all...although, now that you've asked the question I realize that may be a big reason why I like playing the hole so much...go to the course revire and look for the picture...then picture it magnified one or two times (just because that picture seems a bit distance) and you'll see what I'm talking about. I just think it is a really great* looking hole.

"#7 at Shinnecock may be my favorite looking par 3. According to REDANMAN it is an abomination because it is so clearly manufactured and unnatural...

So who really needs natural anyway?"

I do and I don't need Redanman's opinion of #7 Shinnecock. ;)

JES - when you start using astericks and a footnote, I know you must be serious.... TE - when you use the smiley face, I'm always left guessing.

I'm thinking that minimalism and naturalism aren't necessarily the same thing.

"TE - when you use the smiley face, I'm always left guessing"

So is he...don't sweat it!

Tom,

But the reality is, the hole is completely manufactured...

JES II,

Yes, # 7 is manufactured/engineered/man-made, but, it fits in nicely, especially with the ridge on the horizon.

And, the 11th at Mountain Lake fits in nicely at the foot of the hollow even though we know the green was manufactured/engineered/man-made.

What's of critical importance is how does the architectue interface with the golfer.

I submit that in both examples, very well.

The ultimate proof is in the tasting/playing, and not aerials or photos, and both holes are challenging and fun to play.

P.S.  With respect to the bet on the elevation change
between the front tee in the photo and the front of the
nearest bunker on # 13, I've been asked if I'd be willing
to syndicate my action, rather than keep it all to
myself.  I'd be happy to allow others to participate with
me and I'd be happy to increase the bet, allowing
others to get out of bed more frequently, AND I'd be
        willing to give odds.
