Oddest looking courses from above
« on: January 13, 2008, 01:39:16 PM »
The aerial of The Institute just looks so strange. It got me thinking - what other courses, especially very good courses, look weird from above?

I'm thinking about the complete architecture of a place, not just a single green shaped like a heart or the state of Texas or whatever. What other courses come to mind?

Tobacco Road is the first place that comes to my mind.  I think the National also looks strange.  Oakmont with its rectalinear bunkering is another.  Anything in the desert, too because of the unreal (literally) contrast of green fairways and the scrubby surrounds.

The Old Course at St. Andrews must surely be among them.

Of my own courses, I suspect Stone Eagle and Sebonack are the most difficult to piece together from an aerial photo, because of the way that fairways are connected.

Bandon. The images show very little delineation from fw to rough to native area.

Tom - suprised you say Sebonack as the areial on Microsoft Live Local looks pretty good.

Sounds like a need to fire up Google Earth again and get some some screenshots posted   ;D

Though not a true overhead from a satellite, when you see Chambers Bay from the outer rim of the place, it looks so small, then when you get down into it, it gets ginormous.

This one looks odd compared to the current day offering - Yarra Yarra.  Housing left and right of frame have become a problem, and all of those little black dots in the picture have grown, although some of them are not STIHL there.

These aren't from Google Earth and some are out of date
and/or not as zoomed-in as is available now, but it's a head start on 456 courses:

I've taken some aerial images...

Tobacco Road:

Chicago Golf Club

Stone Eagle:

In all my travels on google earth, this is the most dense cluster of courses I've seen.  Palm Springs area:

For good measure I've also included what I think is Sand Hills...it was tough to find, it really is in the middle of nowhere.

And as a bonus question, can you guess this course?

And as a 2nd bonus...this course looks fine from the air, why no love on GCA?   ;D

Kalen,

Is that 2nd course Trump L.A.,  perhaps?

Bulls Bay in Charleston looks wild from above. Its a Strantz, so it would figure to look much like TR or Tot Hill Farm

Here's one caught during construction...

It looks like something was going on at the 'E' green that day...

What club is that to be? Its far from nowhere near the Colorado-Nebraska border. Certainly out of the way for people wanting privacy I guess.

OK so don't shoot me for not recognizing a Doak design instantly. It took me a while to figure it out...but now I've got it.

Jeepers!  How long of a walk is Sand Hills?

Tom, you are right.  Stone Eagle is quite difficult to make out.  It looks like it may have been based on a Rorschach Test.

I was thinking precisely the same - I do love the wilderness and solitude though, looks fabulous.

You are correct, the bonus courses are Barnbougle and Trump's course in LA....

Kalen,

You posted several of the courses' aerials (and Jay F. posted
another) that I've had (mostly) ready to use for a continued
short (~2 months) run of AOTD, as the new ones weren't
available at the time of the original run.  I only promised a
continuation several times a few years ago, but keeping my
job became a little more important, not to mention that the
novelty has probably gone for most.

Almost anything in Vegas would have to qualify, particularly Wolf Creek and The Falls.
