Public courses of West Palm Beach
« on: November 17, 2007, 07:31:47 PM »
I am going to be visiting my sisters new place in West Palm Beach over thanksgiving and my brother is looking for somewhere to golf. I  am accepting the fact that there is nothing worth visiting for myself so what public golf courses in the area would fill the appetite of the typical cart golfer without making me walk off the course after 9 holes.

You sure are hardcore.....you would walk off a course, leaving your brother to finish alone?

West Palm Beach Municipal golf course, by Dick Wilson.

Unless someone insensitively renovated it, which I think may have been rumored?

Park Ridge is a must-play if you're in the West Palm Beach area.  It just opened this spring and is unlike anything in south Florida.  It's a landfill course by Roy Case.
The rest of the public tracks in the area pale by comparison, and the price is right.
Definitely check it out.

Here are some other courses:

1.Roy Case's Park Ridge GC in Lake Worth: Built on a former landfill, there is elevation unusual for South Florida. The course has a 6-6-6 routing with some very good holes, is very reasonable in cost and has a good pace of play.

2. The Jack Nicklaus redo of North Palm Beach CC is somewhat controversial because of some severe greens and is more expensive but worth a look.

3. Binks Forest GC in Wellington is a Gene Bates redo of a Johnny Miler/Bates design that recently reopened after a 5 year closing.

Try the following:

North Palm Beach CC: This is Nicklaus's redo-public

Jupiter Country Club: This is a brand new Norman course in a brand new housing development without houses or buyers, my guess if you call, they will let you play

Trump International where they are currently holding the LPGA and always looking for new members.
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Ryan,
I played North Palm Beach CC a month ago for less than $50. I actually thought the design was good, with greens that are VERY severe. I thing if the conditioning were better and the greens a little 'softer',  this would be a Top 25 in the state. It worth seeing for sure.

Joe, hes a big boy, I think he could handle it, although I would ask him for a ride back to the clubhouse.

Thanks all for the suggestions, I'm really looking forward to a nice break from school and work. Park Ridge sounds pretty interesting, I'm a big fan of converting brown fields to golf courses.

I also see that there is a little ole Raynor course next door called the Everglades. Has anyone ever seen or played? There is a chance I might be taking a trip to that other Raynor course but in case that does not happen is it worth the time to nose around. I have only seen bits and pieces of Seth Raynor's work at Fox Chapel so...

Pricy but fun.

www.MadisonGreenGolf.com

Broad landing areas will help to negotiate the over 42-acres of water. Natural sand barrens blend with the vegetation and offer views unique to Southern Florida. Spectacular!

Located in the heart of Royal Palm Beach, The Links at Madison Green is just 15 minutes from downtown West Palm Beach and offers easy access from I-95 and the Florida Turnpike.

For same-day tee time bookings please call the Pro Shop directly at 561-784-5225.

Ryan:

Don't forget about the fun option of the Palm Beach Par-3 course. It's probably one of the best public par 3 courses in the country. Sits between the ocean and the intercoastal. Plus, you can walk! I think their website is www.golfontheocean.com or something similar.

Someone actually posted a photo of the course on another thread a few weeks ago. If you have a day where you don't have 5 hours to waste on the course, it's a great option that I highly recommend.

Regards,

Sobe

Ryan:

A short drive but well worth it is the 36-hole complex owned by the PGA of America at Port St. Lucie. Good golf offerings and the price is very competitive.

The practice range alone is mega huge and on the scale of one what sees at other big time Florida venues such as Orange County National in the greater Orlando area.

If you want a low budget layout that's worth a look -- try the Pines Course at Pompano Beach GC right on the border of Hollywood and Pompano Beach. The shape can be so-so at times but the quality of holes -- especially the last few which head directly into the prevailing southerly headwind does make for a fine finish.

I wanted to back up Doug's comments about the Palm Beach par 3, each year I visit my brother who is in the golf business and lives in Boca, and we try and play a few good courses in the area.  3 years ago, a friend of his (ass't golf professional) suggested we play a skins game at the Palm Beach Par 3, and it has become the only "must play" of our annual weekend.  It's a lot of fun and has some great holes, both on the Ocean and Intercoastal.  Need everything from SW to 3 wood...just a lot of fun.

I'm going to be in the area between Christmas & New Year's so this is an interesting topic for me.  I wasn't familiar with WPB Municipal so I googled it to take a look.

One of the early hits was for a RFP posting by WPB for a golf course architect.  The RFP is closed so it doesn't appear on the current listing, but you can see it cached on google.  Anyway, looks like a renovation may be right around the corner.

Cary L. knows that area better than anyone else on this site. I would recommend following his advice
