I recently received the following update on Machrihanish Dunes. Enjoy!

Thanks a lot, Michael.  The pictures are fabulous looking.

I went to the website and investigated a bit.  I think this will be a demanding course to walk.  The course map shows the green to tee walks on 8-9, 9-10, and 11-12 to be sizable.  David Kidd is quoted on the site as follows:

"For maintenance we will do a little mowing, but will mostly rely on the wandering sheep to keep the fescue in check - just like the old courses used to do. We are returning golf to how it should be played; no longer is it a gentle walk in a garden, it will be a full-fledged mountaineering expedition at this course."

If I had to generalize, I would say the modern architect expects more from the golfer in terms of the physical demands of walking the course.    It seems that most of the great classic courses are easier walks, especially in terms of green to tee walks.

Noticed that the fourth hole was a 320 yard par three from the back markers.

Over 7,200 yards with only three par fives and three par threes.

Bill, that must be a typo on that pdf page.  They then list the 173-yd 5th as a par 4.  That would be some serious quirk.   :)

I think there is a typo on the scorecard... #4 looks to be a 320 yd par 4 and #5 a 173 yd par 3 (not a par 4!).

I was on site about a month ago and the yardages are wrong. I don't think it will be that difficult to walk, but I could be wrong. This just might be the most environmentally sensitive course ever built. The developer is not allowed to move ANY soil in the construction of the fairways. There can be some movement, including additional soil, in the construction of tees and greens. Any turf removed to create a bunker must be replaced on site, but only in areas approved by government ecologists.

How about fairway bunkers?  Will there be any?  Wouldn't they require moving some soil?

Also, any reactions to what you see of the course?

Anthony,

Thanks for the great info.  You did not offer an opinion about how you think it will play.  Does it look fun to play?

Jim:

I liked what I saw.

As far as fairway bunkers, turf will be removed and as much soil or sand removed as needed to create the desired effect.
