Mark Frost should write a book about it.

He's got his subtitle already: "The day the game of golf got a lot worse."

I dislike Justin Timberlake's music, but seeing as he's a fairly ethically sound celebrity (so far as I know; I am known as an 18 year old who acts like a 70 year old) he stands to attract more people to the game, so long as the tournament is publicized to that target audience.

I can think of much worse things for the game of golf at this point.

Why should those of us who are not in the golf business want to attract more people to the game?

I really don't think any his hosting has anything to do with bringing more people to the game or things of that nature.

This is all about selling tix to the Las Vegas event and attracting more people to come out and watch.  No different than the event in Palm Springs by making George Lopez the host.

And as Mike says, its a two way street, of course TimberLake would always want the extra exposure.  And if it really is a passion of his, then all the better for him.

Dan,

Thats an easy one....sheez.

Of course we want higher green fees, more crowded courses, and hackers tearing/gouging up the course.  Who wouldn't want that?

I would expect that when people such as Andy Williams and Glen Campbell first had their names attached to PGA events, that some of the older members around the club houses were making the some comments now being said about Jason Timberlake.

I do not listen to his music or any current pop music.  But I do read newspapers (New York Times and Wall Street Journal) and magazines (New Yorker and Smithsonian), and I certainly know who Jason Timberlake is, even though he is not a part of the entertainment world in which I partake.

But that is what he is, entertainment.  And one aspect of all professional sports is entertainment.  Especially the TV aspect.

So, no I do not think golf just got a lot worse.

Bill, when I asked the question after I saw the headline, I wasn't thrilled but this is truly probably good for the game of golf in this day and age.  I have never tried to be cool and couldn't tell you if his song was on the radio but evidently he is pretty popular and I guess that could ideally grow the game.

Will John Daly be singing on his next CD?

I don't have a problem with Justin Timberlake at all. I'd take his new album over "White Christmas" any day. But seriously? Who cares! No one watched the Vegas event before, and this probably won't change that. Maybe it's because the architecture sucks. Just a thought.

"Like most of us here I have no interest in Jason Timberlake's music."

JohnK:

If you're going to talk about the guy at least get his name right. His name is Jarvis Timberlake, not Jason Timberlake.

Bing Crosby and Bob Hope were young a long time ago ... their tournaments attracted the Hollywood crowd, no different then what Jerry Timberland is expected to do ...

You do remember that Glen Campbell was the host of the LA Open in the early 70s - 80s?

Now here is the choice for rock n' rollers who are promoting golf --
Alice Cooper or Justin Timberlake.  Alice Cooper is scary looking - I doubt that any golf sponsor would want him promoting their image.

The guy is actually very talented musically and does alot of his own writing and producing.
He is not one of those over produced no talented hit makers, and his live performances are highly entertianing.
I saw him in Dallas last year.
Hell the guy loves the game...ans stimulates interest in the game., and believe it or not...Tiger cannot do it ALL by himself..

Isn't he one of Callaway's boys?

Do you really believe this?

Call me a cynic, but having spent a gigantic amount of time around music and musicians (for a brief time, I was the leading employer of out of work Burgh rock stars :)), I just can't imagine this is true.

He can sing moderately well, dance very well, but really you could say the same and more about hundreds if not thousands of undiscovered guys on Broadway. I will say, it seems he has more of a level head than most of his peers.

And I don't think his selection has much impact on the game of golf one way or the other.

This isn't anything new.  Both Andy Williams and Glen Campbell had their own tournaments in the 70's.  The Bob Hope Desert Classic was a staple for decades.  My only question is, "Who the heck is Justin Timberlake?"

He is the younger generation's Sammy Davis Jr.. Wasn't he also a Mouseketeer? I guess Disney didn't want him after the Janet incident.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

Dan Kelly,

Would you please post the Nick Nolte picture, side by side, with Glen's.

I think they might have been identical twins seperated at birth. ;D
