Robert

Do you have a photo of the shoulder on the right just in front of the green?  That is a unique feature of this really outstanding redan along with a really good redan green.

I could play CC Fairfield every day and be a very happy golfer.  Its a terrific golf course in an idyllic setting.

For Pat M  - It has WIND too.

A truly outstanding hole, even better because it is bracketed between 8 ansd 10, also outstanding holes.

Do either of you think this hole would be improved by the removal of the pines and other trees in the near background, offering only the wooded mountainside as a backdrop? I do.

A huge missing piece is the right shoulder. This was shot during a practice round for the US Open Q, and there were players behind who were somewhat impatient.  This will be addressed next round on this absolute gem.

Did any of you guys notice the reminents of the old Biarritz hole?   It is clear to see.  Lots of changes have occured on that golf course over the years.  It is a very special setting!

George Bahto told me the indentation on the right shoulder before the green is referred to some "fat woman's posterior leaving a mark"...

The biarritz is easy to see being that the swale in in the middle of the 10th fairway.. Tony Pioppi told me to walk back 225 yards to what is now some high grass where you can feel the flat area that was the tee underneath.

During the winter I've walked the course several times to get a better look at it since I've played it once.  While very wet, it has tremendous features that are better seen in the winter's low light.  If they restore the double plateau (which they may have this year), they are on the right road.  While it is sad one won't get to play a restored Alps there, the hole that RTJ designed (but did not build--the super did) is a fine hole in my estimation..

I would say Fairfield is very much akin to the Creek in ethos and spirit.. One thing it has that the Creek doesnt-- when I played as a three ball walking we played in 2hrs 45 mins.. 6400 yards I believe and nary a walk longer than 15 yards from tee to green.

CC of F a hidden gem, I'll need to find the old scorecard showing layout, i think the 9th hole used to be the 17th hole.

Fairfield is great, but sadly is also one of the worst renovations of Robert Trent Jones. The worst transgression may be his elimination of the Biarritz Hole. What is left of the green is in the middle of the 10th fairway. Sad.

I go to school with a member of both Brooklawn and CC of F... REALLY looking forward to playing both, as well as Winged Foot with him next summer.

I'll try to snap some pics while I am there, though thats far off.

That green looks nuts.

Tony - Geoff Cornish told me the only hole he redid was the 10th. RTJ did a major plan for the course but, according to what we leaned, did not do any of the work - much of his recommendations were done in house by the super.

When I first visited the course, Pat Sisk (then the super) and I were walking the 10th when I spotted the remnants of Biarritz green (the unique bunkering is still visible) and told him the original tee should be about 225 back along the left of the fairway. Sure enuf there it was - they never even flattened the old tee.

CCF: one of my Raynor favorites.

The reason they made so many changes was that they relocated the clubhouse and the first and eighteenth were not near the new location. The original location was down by the water

The present 6th was originally a split fairway option hole.
If a player insists on playing his maximum power on his tee-shot, it is not the architect's intention to allow him an overly wide target to hit to but rather should be allowed this privilege of maximum power except under conditions of exceptional skill.

George, during your visit to CCF did you seek out other areas where original green sites or tees were?  I’ve always wondered about the original 4th hole, before Tillinghast came in and redid the 4th, the original green appears to be a Raynor ‘Short’ hole in design,  (surrounded by sand, the green was originally to the left of the current 4th).   Any thoughts?

Was there ever an Alps feature at CCF? Regarding your comments on the Biarittz, the neat thing is - its still there(11th hole at one time), it’s just not a green anymore. The greenside bunkers, (now considered fairway bunkers for the current 10th) hole have been restored.

I have played there many times, and my major source of info is the old scorecard.  I will post, along with some pictures.
