Dukes Course - St. Andrews
« on: September 09, 2007, 04:38:47 PM »
A few weeks ago I had a chance to walk The Dukes Course.  I had been very skeptical about the changes but I was impressed.

The bunkering does fit the landscape, the only criticism I heard from members was that the new greens were a bit mad.  I would take that as a compliment.

I have about 30 photos on my mac website here:

Here is a tit bit:

Enjoy..

Bunkers, if they be good bunkers, and bunkers of strong character, refuse to be disregarded, and insist on asserting themselves; they do not mind being avoided, but they decline to be ignored - John Low Concerning Golf

B,
had you seen the Dukes when you were here for 'the year'?

I would definitely agree the course looks way better now. If this was a 'lost' Mack which had been re-discovered, they'd all be drooling over it... ;)

"Here is a tit bit:"

Brian,

How are tit bits different than tid bits?  For some reason, I think I like tit bits a lot better  :P

By the way, hope you are well and sorry you didn't make it to the area this year.  Maybe next?

Aside from the new bunkers and bunker styling, Liddy's new 18th hole is a REMARKABLE improvement on the original; markedly improving the course overall.

Brian,

The original 18th played straight up a steep hill toward the clubhouse. It was one of the most awkward holes I've ever seen.

The new home hole tacks across the same hillside, with the clubhouse right of the green rather than behind it as before. This 'fix' was possible, in part, with the addition of the new 17th you mention.

Liddy's 18th is undoubtedly much more comfortable than the original finish at the Dukes.

Nice picture.
In what way were you skeptical?
