This looks like a compact golden age gem. Check out the photos and map on their website:

Without looking at your link and only having played Norwood Hills 50 times  as a member I can say that Stiles is the greatest RossNor architect who ever lived.  He took the best of Ross and Raynor and made it better.  He just didn't have the high falootin clientle to spoot his virtue.

Although the Maine Island Golf Tour (from which you are cribbing) confirmed that the best of Wayne Stiles marries the naturalistic simplicity of Ross with the greenside flair of Raynor, let's not get carried away.

From all reports, and there have been a great many, Rutland is an exceedingly charming and scenic destination. This correspondent is rarin' for a hit and run, right in the heart of foliage 2007.

Michael Moore:

Rutland is well worth the trip to play.  Wild terrain, fun greens and a lot of Stiles / Van Kleek there.  There were several built up greens that were Raynor-esque, but not to his geometric extreme.  However, I wonder how much Raynor if any Stiles was able to see.  Ross I am sure he came across a lot.

You may also want to check out the Country Club of Barre when in the area, I believe there are 9 Stiles holes there as well.  I wish I had more time on my recent trip out East.

I played Rutland a couple of times 40 years ago while in high school...I recall it was way more fun and "fair" than my home course in Bennington, VT...the infamously sidehill Mt. Anthony CC.

Rutland is wonderful. Charming is a great description.

I have never been disappointed with Stiles/Van Kleek. Taconic is my absolute favorite of the portfolio I have seen. I am interested to see if Gil Hanse can improve the beginning and ending holes on this very fine golf course. He has to tackle the tree situation and some other issue as well. The front side of the Waconah course north of Pittsfield is another example of very good design that has stood the test of time.
