I believe somewhere around 1920-21 the USGA instituted the "architects rule" whereby a professional architect could maintain his amateur playing status. Before that time architects Travis and Tillinghast had their amateur status called into question as did Francis Quimet for a business interest he had in a sporting goods establishment.

TEPaul & Wayne,

I met a member of Shinnecock this morning and we were discussing the ribbon like fairways on the site and the likelihood that there'd be a tendency by some to cut and fill them to flatter playing surfaces.

Uneven lies test a player, even the best players.

There are a number of similar fairways at NGLA.

I'd like to do a hole by hole survey/study on the four contiguous courses to see how many have flat DZ's
