Nex pics of S African courses
« on: March 27, 2007, 12:34:43 PM »
I just finished uploading pics of seven S African courses I played on a recent trip down there to GAP.

The link is:

www.golfarchitecturepictures.com/Pages/safrica.html

The courses were Fancourt Links, Montagu and Outeniqua and Arabella Western Cape, Pearl Valley, Erinvale and De Zalze.

Only really outstanding course was The Links,  the others were average to good with sometimes fabolous views and backdrops (esspecially Arabella). Unfortunately only the Links course did not have extensive housing around the course.

Also all courses have electricly charged wired fences, which you can see on certain pics, which kind of makes you sad.... SA is a beatiful country but unfortunately a probematic place....

Frank, thank you very much for continuing to expand your impressive web site of photos.  I started to view Fancourt, and realized that I won't have enough time to drink it all in, during one session.  The photo essays are the closest thing one can get to actually being there to see and play the courses you, Chris, Mark and Jaroen have documented so well.

Having seen Fancourt during the President cup matches, and more so, being able to see contours and details much better in your photos, I am left with real awe at the scope and quality that the course appears to be as a design/build triumph.  Much of it reminds me of Arcadia Bluffs, in that there are a series of different style bunker constructions (sod wall, scooped out pits, and the meandering MacKenzie styles).  The rumbling and rolling FW contouring is remeniscent of Sand Hills terrain.

I also wonder what the turf species is.  I'm assuming Bermuda FWs, and possibly the African Kikuyu grass...

I have to ask (since I have an inordinant fear of snakes) are there serious dangers lurking in that high vegitation?  :o :-\

Golf Architecture Pictures.com is like the Google 'photos' of the GCA junkie tribe.  ;) ;D 8)
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Frank - that picture of 8 and 9 (i think) at Fancourt is a really wonderful photograph. Those holes and the last few along the lagoon are very picturesque, and fun to play.

I have not played all those courses but agree with your general assessment - the courses tend to be very scenically located, without being great architectural achievements.
