Sycamore Hills GC -- Fort Wayne, IN

As requested on another thread, here are some pictures and a few comments on Sycamore Hills. I've only played the course once, so there may be others who can add more information about the course/holes. Yardages are from the back two sets of tees (7200, 6700). I've not played enough Nicklaus courses to know if/where it ranks among his best, but I thought it presented a strong variety of holes and challenges.

#3 Par 4 396/350

Shortish par four around a massive bunker left. The green slopes more from back to front than it appeared.

#7 Par 3 195/167

This hole reminded me somewhat of Blackwolf Run River #13. However, I like this hole better because its length allows for clubs to carry the trees. The shorter tees are placed further to the right allowing for a more direct angle to the green. The water must be carried, however, from every tee.

#8 Par 4 455/421

One of the 2-3 best holes on the course IMO. The tee shot plays downhill with the creek guarding the right. There is plenty of room to drive, but the second must go through the "tree-gate" to the well-guarded green. Two precise shots required to score here.

#9 Par 4 409/385

Par 4 with a second played uphill to one of the more severe greens on the course.

#14 Par 3 205/183

Solid par three to an angled green that is relatively shallow. Not an easy target.

#15 Par 5 530/494

Really neat par five that is unique to me even in the risk/reward arena. The creek meanders through the entire hole and has to be crossed 4 times from the back tees. The green is very long and angled with a fall-off at the back. Probably requires a few plays to understand how to attack this one. I'm guessing not everyone will like this one as much as I do :)

#16 Par 4 463/425

Toughest hole on the course that requires a second over the creek and a bunker to a smallish green. Five is not a bad score on this one.

#18 Par 4 437/406

Solid finisher, another challenging par four that doglegs left before an approach over the water (which does not get too near to the green).

Andy,

It has been years since I have played Sycamore Hills.  Though a solid course, I don't know how it ever got the lofty rankings it has received in the past.

I see a lot of similarities to this course to the Sagamore course just down the road from my house in Noblesville.  Kind of funny considering that has been several years between the two designs but some of the holes appear to very similar in nature.

The item that jumped out from your pictures were the angled green surfaces that appear to be narrow from your photos.  Very much like most of the greens at Sagamore.  If I could ever figure out how to post photos (or felt like I had the time) I would post some of Sagamore during early, late and post construction.

Andy, I like #16 and #18,but still trying to figure out that routing that after #16 you have to cross the parking lot for the final 2 holes.

Great pictures.
Where is it in relation to 4909 Tocoma Ave. ?

Don't ask me why, but for over 35 years I can tell you my address in Fort Wayne and I haven't been there since 1970.

Karl,
Most likely its southwest, its southwest of just about all of town.

Bob,
Its hard admittedly to even find the last two holes, I agree with you there. #16 is a fabulous hole, I wonder if at one point they wanted the course to finish there.

Chris,
Yes, quite a few narrow angled green surfaces. More than just the pictures I posted from what I remember.

It has been a number of years since I played SH.  I do remember I liked the par fives and the par threes.  I also remember that a number of the holes had houses disturblingly close to the fairways.  But it is not the only course that has that problem.  Muirfield Village is also in a housing development.

Tommy,
Housing that is "in play" usually drives me nuts, but I didn't think it was that much the case at Sycamore. Its there to be sure, and much more so than my pictures indicate. I tend to try to find angles that eliminate as much housing from the photos as possible. Some places its more obvious than others.
