Askernish on the BBC
« on: December 08, 2006, 08:59:55 AM »
On last night's BRILLIANT 'Coast' programme on the Beeb, there was a visit to Askernish. The footage is now available on the BBC website:

Go here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/coast/

and click on the 'Watch Coast Now' link. This'll open up the viewer. Then click on the 'Clip: Lost Golf' link. I can't view it right now cos our corporate IT police won't give us braodband streaming video, but it should hopefully be the whole section (5 or 6 mins) from the Show.

The aerials are STUNNING!

Tom,
running fine for me now I'm at home. May be only available to the UK. They do that sometimes. Any other US brethren attempted?

Si senor
I attempted and the clip never would load.  Perhaps I wasn't patient enough.

Darn shame too because this sounds VERY interesting.

Damn, damn, damnity, damn!
Pardon my lingua ecosse, but...
The BBC website allows you to send a link by email to someone, so I sent one to myself. The email says: 'viewable in the UK only'. Broadcast Nazis!!!

I shall withhold my licence fee for this year!

sorry,

I EVEN tried Screen Capturing some stills, but they have that blocked too.
Oh well, for once we Brits have exclusive access to a fabulous golf course (albeit in picture form only...)

Great spot Martin. I'm delighted they are doing a series 2 as I've been dropping hints bout Christmas present of the original one.  The whole series is to be warmly recommended.  It's been interesting watching it because I regularly head for the coast where ever I am in the world, for invigoration and to recharge the batteries, to live in the moment on that day. The programme has shown how rich the history of the coastline of this island nation is, something it often seems easier to take in when in a city or visiting a country churchyard.   Tuna fishing in Skegness anyone?

The commentary loaded fine but I only got a selection of images. How about that natural bunker? It would surprise a few on here how natural really can look and how white that sand is?   The 'archaeologists comments were amusing he compared discovering a lost OTM course to finding a lost Picasso masterpiece!  Who says only Americans can sell because the course manager said 'this is the holy grail of golf'.
Let's make GCA grate again!

You can see this piece of land and dunescape on quite good resolution on googe earth.

You need to find South Uist, which is the island on the Outer Hebridies (west of Scotland). North & South are virtually joined. its the second in size, Lewis is bigger and its maybe100 miles south ofthat one. The course and Askernish is in the south west of South Uist... just pan up from the very SW tip, its maybe 5 miles.

do you have to take a ferry to get to the island?
How cold and windy does it get out there?

I am bumping this because the BBC video is now available for download on the Askernish site, so no more problem with restrictions for those outside the UK.

Nice one, Jason.
Here's the local area on Google Earth.

Is it only me or do I detect some bunkers already extant...???

Oh, Gawd. The Man of Redan will surely DEMAND a visit to the place next month. Somebody, please help me..... ;D

Adam Lawrence, Editor of the newish Golf Course Architecture magazine emailed me with lots of interesting snippets on devs at Askernish. The most immediately engaging was this great pic of the 14th green site. Note, I intentionally omit the word 'proposed' from the above as I think it is ALREADY a greensite-in-waiting! Appearing poised to open in 2008, I am already planning the road trip. Any takers?

There's already been a tee shot to within three feet of that stake!

Hopefully, Adam will eventually get himself registered here. He certainly has a lot to contribute, (provided we don't poop the party!).

Highland Airways now has direct flights from Inverness to Benbecula on South Uist. They probably charge extra for golf clubs but that makes it far from the most remote course in the UK.

Brent:

Then what is? There are courses on the Shetlands and Orkneys, but also flights there, as well, if that's your definition of remote. Durness? Traigh is a bit of a hike; several courses on the western islands -- ones on Ghigha, Rothesay and Colonsay esp. -- can only be reached by ferry. Is there flight service to Islay and the Machrie links? If someone sited a course on the Knoydart Peninsula, that would be my candidate for remoteness.

Phil,

Last time I checked there are regular flights to Machrie but I didn't mean to make it sound like being on an island with a commercial airport takes away from the course in any way.

It just means it's conceivable that I might somehow see Askernish one day, unlike a few courses that are so darned hard to get to I know it will never happen. If there were a course at Knowdart I would feel safe saying I will live my life without catching sight of it.

Well, Knoydart is incredibly inaccessible, but there's not much there except a bunch of Munros. You have to take the drive all the way to Mallaig on the western coast, then a small skiff to a tiny little village on the edge of the peninsula. It's one of the few places on the Scottish mainland that you can't get to via road.

I'd say Machrie is a bit more accessible than the Outer Hebrides, if only because it's that much closer to Glasgow. I'd think Machrie is probably the best, least-accessible course in Scotland -- some might say Durness, but Durness is only nine holes, and I've heard only one of them -- the clifftop-to-clifftop one -- really stands out.

Brent, some of the planes are pretty tiny and may not allow clubs at all.  So just take the ferry from Oban - that way you can play Glencruitten as well.
