Mike and Brad, Thanks for the info and routing. After looking at Jeff Brauer's photos, I see there is one gull-wing bunker that has gone to a grassed one readily apparent. I'd be willing to bet that others originally designed have been graded over during the years since the course was first design by WL. I would truly love a chance to go examine this beauty and attempt to discover if that lost fairway bunker theory is correct. And, the powers that be at Wokonda should take a field trip up to Langford's other great masterpiece at Lawsonia to see what would be revealed if they would just use a chain saw with some enthusiasm, and let the contours and speed ramps and plateaus have their priority on the style of play on the course. It appears too choked by trees now (beautiful in fall as they may be) That was the issue at Lawsonia that they were able to overcome with spectacular results.
The Wakonda routing is a bit strange. But, it appears stronger than one aspect of Lawsonia which only has dogleg rights favoring the fade. But the gull-wing crossing fairway bunker placements there cleverly also give favor to the draw at times due to back side of hump and bunker slopes. I found another routing of Wakonda that would probably be awkward as well but possibly stronger.
front; 1,2,3,10,13,6,7,8,9
and back; 4,5,14,,12,11,15,16,17,18
Perhaps not a huge improvement, if any. I don't think I like 10 to begin the loop if it is fully across water on the drive. I can't tell where the tees are exactly from the aerial. 9 and 18 appear weak to end either 9 hole loops. I can live with 9 par 3, but 18 just doesn't look to be a great closer being short and frog eye bunkers fronting green seemingly demanding a lawn dart approach. But it is really hard to tell the location of elevation changes on the aerial. Jeff's photos demonstrate elevation but don't ID the holes, unfortunately.
Is Wakonda a private course?
