Ryder & Presidents Cups of Architects
« on: November 12, 2006, 06:50:00 AM »
We all know that The Ryder / Presidents Cups involve various match play matches between players selected from teams of twelve. How about a hypothetical involving a little fun - based on architects and their courses ?

As a captain who would be your 12 selections as the best to represent Team Europe v Team America and for good measure the Rest of the World ?

Kevin,

Believe it or not but this has done before in a matchplay tournament (not Ryder Cup style just plain knockout).  I think MacKenzie won in the final but I cannot remember.

Tont, RTJ is included on my Europe side, since he was born in Britain.

Not the one I'm thingking of.  ;)

perhaps it's clearer if I put

RT Jones Jr.

(apologies for the confusion and I realise the above does not entirely clear up my meaning).

David

I like most of your choices for Europe and would probably swap Fowler / Fernie for Watson / Strong from what I've seen

For the U.S. - I can't really comment as I haven't seen enough

ROTW - I'd add Eric Apperly + Norman & Harrison...others ?

ROTW - additions

Graham Marsh
Bruce Devlin
Bob Shearer
Jack Newton
Mike Clayton
Roger Mackay (RIP)

If the competition is based on the quality of the courses, the order may change in a few places.

Kevin and Sean, I could only put 12, but I would definitely place Fowler on the list, perhaps in the place of Watson or Strong, and I did consider Hackett. Maybe Fowler and Hackett as alternates?

Bernhard von Limburger is European, as are Javier Arana and Eddie Hackett. There would also be Don Harradine and Fred Hawtree to consider as Britain's strongest offering after WW II. A most notable Golden Age omission is J.S.F. Morrison.

Faldo, Ballesteros and Langer - please. They can play in the "other" Ryder Cup :)

Ulrich, I did know Limburger was German, I just ran out of room for the Europe side, so....

I agree that the European team is just too deep - sounds like the "other" Ryder Cup :)
