Has anyone seen or played this significant piece of American golf history? I read a very good article on it and its owner William Powell in Golfworld over lunch.

John,

The only Clearview I've played is a NYC public muni.

Where's the course you're referring to?

Tiger-Clearview is located in East Canton, Ohio and, since I grew up about ten miles to the west, I have played it a few times over the years. Architecturally, it is a bit quirky with a decent set of par threes (which tend to slope severely from back to front). The property is pretty interesting with  some rolling terrain and a creek that meanders through some of it. Believe it or not, a few years ago there was a thread here where someone compared some of the greensites to San Francisco Golf Club. I would not go that far (perhaps because I have not played SFGC).
Historically, it is pretty inspiring. Realizing that Bill Powell built the place by hand while working full time at another job would seem to epitomize perseverance.  It is said to be the only course in the country owned and built by an African-American (it was certainly the first).  I stopped by about two years ago and his daughter Renee, who played on the LPGA tour, was working in the pro shop. A very engaging and hospitable woman. It is predominantly a locals course and very affordable.
If one is in the Canton area, it is worth a visit...more for the history than the architecture.
