Water Ranges
« on: October 31, 2006, 08:18:16 PM »
I am working on my final project for this semester and convinced my teacher to let me design a floating driving range for a site near our school. Besides Coeur d'Alean what other courses offer this practice feature? Pictures will also be appreciated!!!

We have a water range at Bayonne - it is absolutely fine for a 'pre-round warm-up', and the NY Harbor scenery is unique - I have yet to figure out the 'yardage buoys' so I'm not sure an aqua-range is ideal for practice but, again, it is just fine for a warm-up

Tri-Mountain, designed by Bill Robinson, which is about 15 minutes north of Vancouver Washington has a range that is in the middle of the golf course.  It looks like any range you would normally see in that it is surrounded by a big fence to keep stray balls in, but it is entirely water.  It is also short as I believe they use restricted-flight floating balls.  I don't know if they are somehow making the water flow that way or if it was the wind the day I played it, but all the balls floated to one corner where they could easily be collected.

I went to their website, but there are no pictures of the range.

Desert Lakes, just outside Laughlin, NV/Bullhead City, AZ.

Probably about 8 islands in a lake that was maybe 150 yards wide by 250 long (the balls fly like rotten plums)

i forget the name of the courses(palm air country club???), but at the dixie amateur in ft. lauderdale, we have one. ITS HORRIBLE, i can't stand it for tournament golf...  the balls are different, i hate the distraction of water, and it just doesn't feal realistic watching the balls drop into the water. I dunno what it is, but all of my teammates agreed with me that it is a terrible way to get ready for a tournament round...

The design firm I used to work for built a couple courses with aqua ranges:  Palm Beach Gardens Municipal (PBG, FL) and The Refuge (Flowood, Mississippi).
I believe there is/was one at Indian Creek in Jupiter, FL, but I'm not positive about that one.
Someone also mentioned the name of one near Miami in an old thread that was used by Matt Dillon and Cameron Diaz in "There's Something About Mary."

There's one in Cincinnati- privately owned. Never been there. Can't imagine hitting floaters for practice- seems futile.

I'll see if I can find any info like a web site.

Red Rocks Country Club in Morrison, Colorado (right by Red Rocks Amphitheatre) has a water range... I've played the course on many occasions, but every time it was the second round of the day on the way back to the mountains, so I have never hit balls on it... My question is how the balls play after they have been retrieved from the water... Any ideas :o

I think the point of most water driving ranges is to use floating golf balls so retrieval is a lot easier. I’m not sure if water would have any effect at all as long as the outer layer is impermeable.

Safe Haven in Grand Cayman, good for warmup but because the balls float they are lighter so flight/distance suffers.

I remember from college golf, there is a water range at some course in the Pinehurst area, but for the life of me, I can't remember the name.

Stonebridge near Birmingham is the only one I've come across on this side of the water.

The infamous Summitpointe GC, Milipitas, CA has one of these... smash balls into a lake... they float to one end where they are recollected.  The balls suck.

Ryan:

I do not intend this as a snide question, but one you should think about and deal with on your project.

Why would you put a water range in the desert?

Wouldn't the evaporation associated with such a range lead to an incredibly high amount of water usage in an area that already overuses water?  Why not do a dirt range that is more environmentally friendly and allows golfers to hit real balls?

Talking of hitting in to water, reminds me that when getting to the 14th tee on our Dunes Course, I sometimes take an old ball, tee it up and drive it into the ocean.

No matter what crappy golf I have been playing until that time, I manage to put the clock back and hit the ball to perfection. Is their a shrink in the house?

Bob

ps. An environmentalist hanging on the wooden paling adjacent to the tee took me to task for befouling the ocean with golf balls. I persuaded her that the ball I used was bio-degradable and no harm would come to the fish. She actually believed me.
