"Golf Guys" they're everywhere.....
« on: January 11, 2008, 05:53:18 PM »
Upon reading of a "Golf guy" on another thread and how owners sometimes bring these guys to a project......there have to be some stories out there....I just didn't realize other people had these guys show up.  NOW not to say that there are not some very good advisors out there but you know what I mean if you have ever seen a "golf guy".  Usually hired by an owner that doesnt play much golf but has a friend that knew a friend that knew the "Golf Guy".....they show up with those little thin soled loafers that fat guys wear out in a day,  have the "product" in their hair, married at least 3 times, usually a two seat sports car, gold chain and lately they are growing those little goat tees.....know what i mean?

I had one hired by an owner that had purchased a course we did...show up as the new pro....advise him on how to make the course less expensive to maintain and produce more rounds....directed me to remove all of my bunkers or he would hire someone else.....he hired someone else.....he made it a year and that owner bankrupted....

And then we always have the one that knows "Jack" or whomever and tells how they did it at his last project......if he is hired after you he advises the owner that he really needs to have a "signature" involved in some aspect.

Who else has spotted these guys?

I can't believe how many so-called owners of golf facilities seem so dumb, and need to bring in a 'golf guy dork' to come in and give him an even more clueless attitude than that dumbass owner already has...

Do ya hafta haf sum serius dumass in ya ta bea owner down thar?

RJ,
The good thing is I have only had it actually "evolve" once...Most owners know what is happening... :)

The "Golf Guy" that I had to deal with never wore socks, and always looked like whatever he was wearing came out of a duffle bag. He practically lived out of his car, I suppose to give the impression that he was a busy man and in demand. The owner hitched his wagon to this guy, and I swore that he would lead him straight into bankruptcy. I left while I still had my sanity. Indications are that my premonition of bankruptcy could be on the horizon.

Not only did he know everything about building a golf course, but he knew everything about building a clubhouse. Surprisingly, we ended up with a clubhouse without a single closet or storage space in it :)

Mike:  Another common denominator I've noticed is that they believe it is in their boss's best interests to spend a couple million on elaborate practice/teaching facilities.

Paul,

Is that what Pee Wee Herman got in trouble for?

Just asking, in case you're a pontificator.....

Joe my friend....I don't know if you know it or not, but I am trying to stop using humor in my posts.

I am trying to keep my posts in a more serious vein.....in an attempt to better dissect, criticize, ruminate and even pontificate about this great game.....and one that for some of us here represents our livelihood.

I don't want to cast blame for anything either of us might of been responsible for, or have shared in the past.....but at least, as far as I am concerned, humor is history. :(

Doug,

That is the funniest thing I have read this year.

Can you give us more than the Cliff's Notes version?

TD,
You know you are right....i just thought about the one that just took over at one of our courses.....all he knew was teaching so he took all merchandise out of shop except for a few hats.....only kept the brand of ball he uses and had the owner build a 3000 ft "teaching building" on the range......all of this because he got the owner to quit slicing one day.....he just sits in the teaching building all day with one of the straw hats on so he can look like Leadbetter.....

Gary:

The best part was when the "golf guy" helped his pal buy out the four other partners that had development experience. So he was left with a golf course and a mountain of debt. The other four (who were the money behind the development to begin with) ended up with the real estate and probably a good laugh!! Priceless. That marked the turning point for me.

The "golf guy" also helped orchestrate changes to the golf course behind the architect's back between site visits. In the interest of pace of play, of course.

I saw "golf guy" at the Ryder Cup a couple years ago. I'm glad to report that he still doesn't own any socks. Or they are lost somewhere in the back seat of his car.

I could go on all day!!!

I have found a lot of these guys were managers for American Golf in their heyday in the 80's and thought they could do it on their own.

I worked for one who had started his own management company.  After a while, he went back to what he knew, the American Golf way of "sucking the paint off the walls" and the golf course suffered and after his 5 year contract ran out was not renewed.

I'm confused.  He was a regional manager if this is what you are asking.

I think the real question is where do the golf guys snag their prospects ? I mean there probably isn't an interview process involved here.

Works the same as a board at a club making decisions...know just enough to be dangerous......so many of the owners have the money but not the golf knowledge.....
It is really bad when these golf guys come to another country from the States and find a sucker/owner.....I can show you several cases in full swing right now internationally.... ;D ;D
