And so what if it's 1500 courses long. The world has grown since the first top 100 list. Maybe one of in-house Economists could factor in a relative number inorder to decide how big the list should be.

I think you have to start with TOC. I can't think of a single golf course not influenced in some way by it; it's the Rosetta Stone.

I agree w/ Jordan about Merion East, and I think Royal Dornoch almost certainly has to be in a top 10. And I'd add Oakmont -- maybe along w/ Merion East the best inland course in the US. In fact, I might include both the Pennsylvania courses before Pebble...and Royal Melbourne probably deserves a spot in there. So that's 12...

I think it would be a cool exercise even if the result meant nothing.  Who wants to volunteer to be the guy to receive and organize the 1500 private messages and tally up the results.  I think we require that the voter has played the course, just for consistency.  Add up the results and list them in order.

How many of the 1500 participants do you think would cast a vote in a month's time?

Try to not count the votes of people with multiple log on names...or those who alread rank for another magazine or web site.  That should greatly limit your work.  If you do or do not allow people to vote on courses where they are a member or have a finacial interest, past or present, is also up to you.  The best way around the above problems is to require a green fee payment stub accompany each vote.

Best course I ever played and payed where I don't have a relationship with the architect or undue worship thereof...Torrey Pines South.

North Berwick not only gets my vote as top 25 GB&I it is one of the courses that I would thrown in the debate for top 5 GB&I.  There is no way I could see myself listing NB lower than 10th.

Fascinating.  I don't have as much experience of many of the great UK courses as you and I've only played North Berwick a couple of times but it wouldn't be in my top 10 and I'd be surprised if it was top 25 (I'll have a think about that).  Shows how diverse opinions can be.

BTW, notwithstanding where I'd rank it, I love North Berwick and will be going back very soon, I hope.

I like Crooked Stick too but met my host Alice Dye on the practice range.  I will have to abstain.  It's hard to not have a story about the greatest private courses in the world.
