Club zur Vahr looking for new Superintendent
« on: October 16, 2006, 06:57:40 AM »
In case anyone here is interested and, I guess, can speak German:

http://tinyurl.com/yy2xcg

It doesn't actually say "Club zur Vahr" in the listing, but from the description it is readily apparent.

That's for a Super?

Sounds more like a General Manager or a Director of Operations to me, but my German may be rusty.

Or maybe they have a different take on the superintendents role in Germany - since they leave him in charge of the clubs budget and also are looking for someone with skills in internal and external marketing concepts.

 :)

Maybe I am using the wrong term in English, what would a superintendent be expected to do?

This position is like a CEO.

Ulrich,

No pun intended of course. I am from Sweden and totally understand the mixup. The "indentent" at my home club in Stockholm is the clubs general manager. In the states the "superintendent" manage the golf course.

What is the difference? Now, in this case the Club zur Vahr has additional sporting facilities. But most clubs have a Golf course to manage and that's that.

You can call it superintendent. You can also call it head greenkeeper.

Here is how the Swedish Greenkepeers Association defines their membership categories:

Course Manager (CM)
A Course Manager is employed as a superintendent with full responsibility for the golf course. A CM is also directly under the committee and has a

* Higher greenkeeper education or similar and 6 years of work experience as Head Greenkeeper.
* Or 10 years of work experience as a Head Greenkeeper

Head Greenkeeper (HG)
A Head Greeenkeeper is employed as a superintendent but do not fulfill the requirements for a CM and has as a minimum a

* 2-year education and 3-year practical training within golf course management
* Or 5-year practical training or employment within golf course management

Cheers,

Eric

So a superintendent in Golf is the head greenkeeper? My dictionary says "Head of Operations", hence the confusion.

Hallo Ulrich,

Superintendent in (American) English generally refers to one of three people:

1.  Head greenskeeper.  (Others can perhaps say whether one term or another is more common in particular parts of the U.S.)

2.  Some jurisdictions use the title for the head of a state/local office, most typically education (vgl. Bildungsminister eines Landes/einer Stadt).

3.  Mostly in big cities in the northeast, he's the guy who (theoretically) fixes the water/heat/air conditioning in an apartment building, often in exchange for free/reduced rent.  In this case, always shortened to "super."

For the job listing you cited, something like "business manager" would probably be the translation if you didn't go with Voytek's options.

MfG aus Houston,

Jason

I think business manager isn't enough, this guy is like a CEO, he's in charge of the budget and all the employees, which would include the superintendent :)

Heh.  I just think you have to be a dot com to have a CEO despite having only 20 employees.   ;)
