Louisville Area Golf
« on: October 18, 2006, 06:30:50 PM »
Just returned from one college football weekend and have booked flight for the next. Heading to Louisville in a couple of weeks and wondered if their are any "hidden gems" in the area. Will be there with a handfull of golf professional friends and golf may be on the agenda and Valhalla does not necessarily excite me. Anything worth checking out?

Actually staying at Caesar's Indiana.

D do tell more. This sounds interesting. Greg is concerned about how low his spirits might be on Sunday. He might need a bit of golf to pick him up. lol

If I am still down on Sunday then the game will have been a complete beatown as it is played on Thursday night.

LCC sounds interesting. How close to where we are staying at Caesar's in Elizatbeth, IN?

Would showing up at LCC in gold & blue be frowned upon Friday after a big Mountaineer victory the evening prior?

So is Valhalla the only "must play" in the Louisville area? How is Hurtsbourne(sic?)?

Thanks, looks like I'll try to convince the boys that LCC might be the place to play.

Unfortunately our colors have migrated to that of Michigan... was a conscious decision of Don Nehlen back in 1980 when he came to WVU from... yep Michigan.

Greg;

Tis true, Kentucky has some absolutely fantastic public courses at under $40. But Louisville is a wasteland.

But there ARE great Private Courses there. I know Art Hills is unpopular here, but his Persimmon Ridge is better that Valhalla according to everyone i know who has played it and is NOT a GCA member! Audobon and Big Spring are spoken well of. Hurstbourne too.

Greg:

Seconf Bro. Ralston on Persimmon Ridge- also the site of the new KGA-KPGA Headquarters opening in November.

I just played Audubon CC in the KY Mid-AM this past Monday and Tuesday. Another Louisville club that has undergone an extensive renovation. I was very inpressed. It has the geographic advantage for you of being right down the street from the U of L stadium- right across the freeway from the airport. Valhalla and Persimmon are about 1/2 hour away. Hurstborne is only 15 minutes and well worth the trip. Big Spring is very close to Hurstborne. It was redesigned two years ago by Fazio. Its members at the KY Mid were raving about the conditions.

Have fun!

BTW, all the renovated clubs went to zoysia fairways.

Big Spring was redone by Rees Jones not Fazio from what I have been told. I think he ruined 3 good holes but made 3 mediocre holes better, so a toss up there. Condition wise, when I played it just after the redo, it was in great condition.  Hurstbourne would be a good choice, have not played there since the renovation, even though I was a Junior Club champion there in the early 70's. Persimmon Ridge would be the best choice, way out east almost to the county line out Shelbyville Rd or US 60.Caesar's course is by Bill Bergin and is ok, the front side is much more interesting than the backside.  Old English would be close by, Hurdzan routed the course but I don't think he did anything else, it has some holes that play thru the old town itself before it was relocated due to extensive frequent flooding, yes, they moved the whole town and left the old buildings standing. Your actually not real far from the Hills course at French Lick also.  Hunting Creek CC is a 60's course out NE of the city down US 42, it use to host the LPGA event back in the day and is pretty good also. I would go Persimmon, then Hurstbourne, and group the rest as a toss up.

Bob, you are correct on Big Spring and Rees Jones. My bad.
