The Donald Ross Course at French Lick has reopened
« on: September 11, 2006, 09:58:30 PM »
The Donald Ross Course at French Lick Springs and Casino reopened after a restoration on September 8. The project was quite successful. Architect Lee Schmidt working with the 1917 plans did a masterful job of returning this course (formerly the Hill Course) to its original parameters and feel.

The greens were returned to their original size, all the bunkers were reshaped and returned to their positions and the tees were all rebuilt. The cart path system was removed and replaced with concrete paths that are much less intrusive than the old macadam paths.

The weather was about as bad as possible for doing this work, alternating between 90+ degrees and torrential rain. The shapers (MacCurrich out of Florida) did a great job.

I would recommend that you put the Donald Ross Course on your itinerary for summer next year. It is quite a treat.

Pete Dye is building a 7,600 yard course on one of the best sites I have ever seen and that course should be open in 2008.

The combination of Ross and Dye should prove to be a pretty good one/two punch.

The Dye course will be private, I believe.

It is my understanding that the Dye Course will be open to the public. The Frenc Lick Hotel and the Baden Spa have a casino license and both courses will give priority to the guests of the hotels.

Wasn't Fuzzy Zeoller originally hired to renovate French Lick? Who made the restorative push?

Michael,
Thanks for the update. I played the course in the early 90's and really enjoyed it. I look forward to seeing it again when my travels take me that way.

Then perhaps we're thinking of different Pete Dye courses. I know of one proposed course near Martinsville that is targeting the same private demographic as his (and Tim Liddy's) fairly-new Bridgewater on the north side of Indy. If he's also doing one to accompany the Ross course in French Lick then so much the better.

Or I could be completely full of it.  :)
