Help Identifying a Course in New England
« on: September 09, 2006, 11:10:01 AM »
Back in 1971 I spent a couple of weeks around the Boston area.  I played a wonderful short, hilly course within a half an hour of Franklin, to the south, and probably in Rhode Island.  It was a public course, that had a strong Ross feel to it.  The clubhouse was accessed from a two lane road, oriented N/S.  The 10th hole was a shortish dogleg right, with the tee on a high point not far from the clubhouse, down to a valley fairway which ran parallel to the main road.  From there, the approach was to a green perched up somewhat on another hillside.  The bunkers on the course were oval shaped, not many in number, but well placed.  I know that this is very limited information.  This course made a great impression in my early exposure to golf, and I would appreciate any help in identifying it.

LOU,

How did you get from Franklin to RI in 30 minutes; did you own a G-5 at the time?

Was the course public or private?

Peter,

Thanks for the link.  The course I am trying to identify was not on that map.

Pete L,

My geography is probably faulty.  The course in question may be in MA, though I remember playing in RI during this trip.

Lou,
How about this link to Massachusetts publc courses. No map, but maybe you'll remember the name. It is broken down into four sections and Franklin and areas SE are in the Boston area section.

Lou,

Was it Maplegate by chance?  It's in the area and has a dogleg right 10th hole, just not sure if it was around back in 71!

If not, I'd say your best bet is to check out the MGA website for these 2 regions:
