Go on! - Tear yourselves away from the Coast
« on: July 12, 2006, 04:20:52 PM »
Excuse the image size, but they look better bigger!
Do yourselves a great big favour and, the next time, you're in Scotland - GO INLAND!!!

You won't regret it.

A friend and I played the Kings three times, Queens once. On advice of a Scottish host, we never tried the third course at Gleneagles.

Lovely course the Kings.

Several other interesting holes were left out of the above fabulous photos !!

Go visit the Kings !

Just look at 5 there, what a golf hole. I love this place!! 1,5,6, the short 14th? and Braid's Brawest!!! The Queens is such a good time as well, so are the little courses. Haven't see anything from the newer course that would get me off the Kings or the Queens. The 17th and the tee-shot on 18 are just indelible memories!! Played 72 in one day on the Kings and the Queens.

Glenn,
5. Spoilt only by that horrid rectangle of Astroturf. You'd have thought with the 'resources' available to this place they'd do a bit better there.

Martin -

Aside from the brilliance of the Kings & Queens at Gleneagles (and Boat of Garten), what other inland courses would you recommend? Blairgowie? Pitlochry? Letham Grange? Have you played or heard anything yet about the new Spey Valley course near Aviemore?

Nah....those bunkers should be redesigned to have a lacy look... ;D
Bunkers, if they be good bunkers, and bunkers of strong character, refuse to be disregarded, and insist on asserting themselves; they do not mind being avoided, but they decline to be ignored - John Low Concerning Golf

Gleneagles is a great place, but that is THE WORST application of AstroTurf I've seen yet.

Couldn't they get people to walk around to the back so they could hide the artificial turf?

The Kings course is on my short list of must-plays.

Can someone please remove the astro-turf before I arrive?

Perhaps someone could perform some constructive vandalism in the middle of the night?

Well Martin, please go inland all you want. I had the time of my life at Ganton and Woodhall Spa. I will eventually play more inland courses but it is kicking and screaming. I love the links.

Martin,

I can't say that I remember that, I would think that I would remember that. It has to be new.  I loved 6, the hole right after that one.

TomD,
re the AstroTurf EyeSore, please, please, please drop a wee note to David Kidd who will maybe pass on your highly regarded comments to his faither!!!

David/Glenn,
Ladybank is 'probably' a Doak 7ish. I hesitate to place it any higher as it is a bit boring in terrain terms, although the routing is pretty, the turf lovely and the heather bloody difficult!
The newly enlarged clubhouse is also a bit of an eyesore along the 17th and 18th fairways.
They have built a truly horrible new green way to the left of the existing #2 green (the par 5) which is all pushed-up and tilted. Needs a monster draw to get there in two for the big hitter or a crapo dink over the end of the trees for us shorter(older) chaps. I hope they plough it over soon!

Other grand inland tracks which I like (but which may or may not be 'Doakable') are Alyth (magical terrain - the same post-glacial gravel fans as Blairgowrie), The Roxburghe (a bit 'american' but quite a hoot to play), Braid Hills (we've spoken of before and which really MUST be visited by any GCAers touring Scotland), PITREAVIE! (if only for evidence of embryonic MacKenzie design philosophies).

There's a huge number of other 'lower-class' tracks which should be seen on maybe the third visit here. Loads of nice ones in the surrounds of Glasgow and Edinburgh (kind of moorland-y, heathland-y) which can be easily reached; some historically interesting old ones along the A9 into the Highlands; many in redeveloped parkland around old stately piles which might be of little interest architecturally, but are fun places to play nonetheless. Sometimes it's cool to relax 'the rules'!!!
