I'll be entering my senior year in high school this fall, which means that this summer entails a lot of college visits.  This coming week, my father and I are going down to Atlanta to visit Emory and Georgia Tech.  His new business venture is a newsletter aimed at baby-boomers looking for  place to retire in the south, so we'll be playing Cuscowilla on the 29th, which I am looking forward to very excitedly (it'll be my first C&C experience).  We'll probably play a few other times in between; what would be some recommendations?

Tim,

Cuscowilla will put you about 45 minutes east of one of the best courses the Atlanta area has to offer.. Arnold Palmer's Cherokee Run which skirts the Intl. Horse Park in Conyers.  I recommend it highly.

If you are able to jog north from Cuscowilla, you will be about 90 minutes from two fine courses.. the new Arrowhead Pointe at Richard B. Russell State Park, and Mike Young's Cateechee, which I had the recent good fortune to play.  You could play both in the same day.  Arrowhead Pointe is being compared favorably to all the courses on Lake Oconee, and the price is much more reasonable.

Two recommendations in Atlanta:  Mystery Valley near Stone Mountain and Brown's Mill near the airport.

Feel free to IM if you need more info.  And be a prudent student and pick Georgia Tech.

Tim, pay no attention to well-meaning Gary, and consider Furman (Greenville ,SC), the little school that whipped Georgia Tech in football a few years ago ;) .

Plus, Furman has a better course on campus than Tech!   ;D

Andy --

I believe the non-event you reference occured "a few" years before Tech's most recent National Championship.

Help me out on this one..what's a Palladin?

Gary, you have a point---when I said 'a few years', somehow it ended up meaning 20 or so.  Have I really been gone so long?  :-\
(Tech won a national title? As the second best team in the state? ;D)

OK, you may have me on the football--but I stand by the better course on campus!

I suspect you will love Cuscowilla.

Pawleys is essentially Myrtle Beach.  If you go down 95 you could play anywhere in Charleston (which includes Kiawah), Hilton Head (which includes tons of worthy stuff), and more.

Near Cuscowilla, I found Harbor Club a lot of fun.

Haven't been to Cateechee, but I've always wanted to play one of Mike's courses.

Enjoy.

Cuscowilla is a favorite, and nearby is Madison Lakes, a new Mike Young course which should have opened not long ago.  If Mike spots this, maybe he can chime in.  Cateechee is quite a ways north of the Atlanta-Pawleys Island line, more up in the Atlanta-Greenville route.  Cateechee is a whole lot of fun, great big course on a huge tract of land, but it is nowhere near the route you want to be on.

Maybe a Google search on Madison Lakes will be fruitful.  It is literally within a half hour of Cuscowilla, just south of I-20.

The route from MB to Atlanta will also take you through Santee, SC area which has several reasonable golf courses (even if they are pretty much architecturaly vanilla), also you have the new Bartram Trail course on the West side of Augusta not far off of I-20 as you are heading through.  Rick Robbins designed course just opened in the last year.

Having said that Cuscowilla and the whole Reynolds Plantation area has the best there is to be found between the Grand Strand and ATL.

Good luck.

ps I bumped into Mike Young last week at The Georgia Club and I think he said Madison lake had either just opened or soon would be.  Althought I dont think that is what the course is actually going to be called now.

Madison Lakes will be opening in the fall and the course's name will be Long Shadow. Mike has quite a design on his hands there...really neat stuff!

As they used to say in the 60's, "You only go round once in life."  Why even think about Georgia when the Home of Golf is open to you!

I can see this is becoming more about schools than golf. Rihc noted at dinner the other night, the only thing which compares to the passion the world cup generates is college football. I say play Cuscowilla and drive straight to Baton Rouge and enroll at LSU. It is 68 days to kickoff. There is no passion like SEC passion. Mike's Madison Lakes will be very good. John made some great recs in the Hilton Head area as well. Please do not forget Mike at KI.

Tim,
Where will you be staying, and how many times do you hope to play in or around Atlanta?

Arrowhead Pt. and Catechee are great, but they are going to be too far out of your way.  You'll hit Cherokee Run as you come in on I-20, and then the choices in and around Atlanta become dependent on your schedule and where you are staying.

If you are flying into Atlanta, you should take a trip to nearby Wolf Creek (Mike Young). It's a very interesting course.

Andy Hughes: I assume that you are a fellow Furman grad? I have my 15-year reunion this fall (talk about time flying). It's amazing that there would be a fellow Paladin on the web site. And, yes, Furman does have a great on-campus golf course.  :)

Tim,
Rich's suggestion is not all that far fetched. Emory ('99) has a partnership with St. Andrews University that involves a year overseas at the other school. The program is amazing... you get full tuition, room and board, $25,000 in travel money and the chance to get pampered by extremely generous alumni. 4 students from each school are chosen to swap places. It is extremely competitive.Oh... and the year does not count toward your schooling, so your grades don't matter. Start working on those extracuriculars!

Well I am writing this from my hotel room in Athens, GA, where my father and I will be playing today and tomorrow.  We actually made the trek out to Cateechee yesterday afternoon, but were rained out after nine holes.  I really liked the front nine, with the highlight being the very cool and precipitous skyline green on the 4th.  I hit a shot just over the back and ended up 20 feet below the green.  It was all rough on which the ball sat up okay, so that made a very intimidating shot manageable, which gives the course playability points.

I also thought the irregular arrangement of pars on the front was neat too, with one par 4 in the first six holes; 5-3-5-4-5-3-4-4-4.  The topography reminded me of Tot Hill Farm on the first two holes, but holes 3-7 opened up and were more like playing through old farmland.  Very charming.  I hope I get to see the back side soon, as it has a 300 yard par 4 and a 630 yard par 5.

So, here I am in Athens.  What are your recommendations for courses within an hour or so?  My father and I are heading out in a little while, so this would probably be for tomorrow's round, after which we'll be heading to Atlanta proper.  Is Cherokee Run the best option, or are there some other worthy options?

About colleges.  I'm looking for two proncipal criteria in the college I choose: strong academics and a golf team I may be able to play for.  That basically puts Tech out of my path, that and the fact that I'm more interested in English than Engineering.

Thanks for the replies!

Georgia Tech and books other than engineering do not mix. Stetner is one of the greats at how to work a long career out of what is thought to be a 4 year plus graduate school part of your life.

I second this.  Upon graduation from LSU you will be able to place your diploma in the rear window and park in handicap spaces.

Go to Arrowhead Pt.; you'll thank me.  Just ranked 2nd in the country in Best New Affordable, and it is all of that.

Tim ..

Sorry about the rain.  Everything here is likely to be drenched, but do try Cherokee Run... it drains pretty well, unlike Brown's Mill.

I am with you on #4 at Cateechee.  That was my favorite hole out there.  Really cool to come upon a links-inspired hole in the middle of a forest.

Good luck with the rest of the trip.

Tim, if you are in Athens and haven't made arrangements to play Athens CC, a truly splendid Ross gem, too bad!  That is the 'can't miss' in the Athens area.
