Beauty and the Beast
« on: May 03, 2006, 01:19:45 PM »
We just played The South Course at Gallery (site of next year's Match Play) and Stone Canyon (just next door to Gallery).  Stone is built of a stark and beautiful rock-scape with esthetic values off the map.  Good drives are rewarded, bad drives mildly punished.  The green surrounds are generally softer with gentle contouring - more forgiving to missed-green recoveries.  Morrish gives you fun on the greens while not trying to beat you up.  But the take-away from Stone is the beauty.  In low light the shaddowing provides a beath-takingly beautiful setting for the photogragher.  Stone is both beautiful and fun - stuff of good golf.

On the other hand Gallery South, from your approach on in, is nothing but complications.  Far less scenic than Stone, Gallery is spread out over surprisingly flat land where your tee shots are less of an issue (until they narrow the fairways and grow the rough).  The brillance of G-S comes from these Pinehurst-like green complexes, which are anything but tricked up and they will give you fits.  It will be an excellent tournament course and one that the pros will like.  For viewers, expect many 3-putts and many matches settled by chipping and putting.

One beauty, one beast, both good.
