Excellent food critique!  But back to golf....I'm going down this summer for a week, please expand and expound upon the courses you played.  I'll play two rounds and need to decide between Caledonia, True Blue, Heathland, TPC and The Reserve.

Hey Matt..

I've played all of the courses you listed.

I'd toss TPC out the window first.  It's not a bad course, but definitly not stacking up to the rest of the ones you listed.

I'd say Caledonia makes the cut first.  It's a great course in an even better setting.. 18 alone makes it worth the play.

The rest comes down to your personal choice.  True Blue represents Mike Stranz perfectly.  It's almost over the top.  It's a very good course though.

Heathland really makes you think.. Whether it's club selection or strategy, it's a fun track to play.  Only issue I had with the course was the lack of maintenance on the bunkers.  Only in terms of the amount of sand.  In some, there was little to no sand and only a bunch of packed down clay.  Kinda tough to get out of a pot bunker if your club bounces when you swing.

Personally, I love The Reserve.  It's a course that I imagine was similar to how Augusta was in that it doesn't have any rough.  Fairway extends to the pine trees and it's often in pretty firm condition.  The one complaint I have is that the par 3's are all similar (except for #12 which incorporates a natual lake pretty well).

If you have any specific questions, post them and I'll try to answer them..  Otherwise, you really can't go wrong with your choice of courses.. Just remember to play the other ones the next time you venture down there.

Enjoy!

Jeff

Matt,

I intentionally did not comment on the golf.  You clearly highlighted my favorites though.

I have not played Heathlands or the Reserve so I have no comment.  I think that Caledonia, True Blue and TPC are all excellent courses and it would depend very much on who you are and what type of golf courses you like, to truly answer the question.  Caledonia deservingly is in GW's top 100 and I would be surprised if TPC and True Blue missed by much.  I do not believe that you could go wrong at any of the three and clearly can think of a type of golfer that would find each of the three best.
And I took full blame then, and retain such now.  My utter ignorance in not trumpeting a course I have never seen remains inexcusable.

Jeff & David --

Thanks for the replies and advice...would love to sneak a 3rd round in somehow.  Caledonia will get a look, and I'll have to diligence the other a little more, probably Heathland or Reserve.  Tx.

If it's a one day thing, Reserve is down by Caledonia and True Blue.. Heathland is about a 30 minute drive away in good traffic.

Good luck!

Matt,
Caledonia and True Blue are across the street from each other, and combined represent a wonderful, if quick, overview of Mike Strantz.  Both are wonderful, but are totally different from each other.  If there is ANY way to play 36 in a day, that is worth doing, and there are deals there that combine the two very affordably.

I notice you did not comment on Pawleys Plantation.  I'd be interested to know what you thought of it, especially the par threes, and 17, most of all.  What tees did you play, and did you think the green was too shallow to realistically hold a shot?  My recent rounds there have called this into question.  It's great to be able to play such firm greens as PP, but there may be a limit.
