I'll be playing there next Thursday. Can anyone tell me something about it?

It has one of the most magnificent views in all of golf.

Unfortunately, that's the high road above the course driving into town.

Aside from a couple of holes, eminently forgettable.

Sorry.

No, you don't get to see the sea and, until the end, the course doesn't penetrate the dunes, BUT there are some very good holes out there and the green fee is quite moderate for such a course.

The first few holes on the flatlands inland of the dunes are pretty mundane.  There are 4 or 5 world class holes in the dunes in the inward nine and a few other really good holes.  The overall impression is not great due to the compromises from the mundane inland holes.  They do have a great view of Harlech Castle though.

Wayne's photo gives some impression of a remarkable feat achieved there many, many years ago with old clubs and balls.  After a boozy dinner several golfers laid bets on being able to hit the castle walls with a drive made from beside the clubhouse.  Apparently it was achieved by one of the gamblers.  It was quite an achievement back then.

I'm not certain the Harlech deserves its high ranking, but it is a wonderful test of golf.  The front nine is over relatively flattish land but requires the golf to think his way around.  The back nine is through some fine dunesland and is worth the trip all by itself.

Mark,

Pay no attention to Sean. :D

Harlech is a disgrace - it doesn't even have links turf - or didn't when I was there.

Old water meadie, indeed.
