A belated congrats George. I did not know your marbles were in question. Surely a Champion would never let that happen.

The Fair was for two years, Adam.  1939-40.

I wonder if George changed his name, or was "Bohto" just an early example of the tyop?

Incredibly, I can recognize George under all that hair! ;D
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

I would recognize George by this youthful picture even out of context.  Tommy N, we should send you photos of ourselves as kids and you post them for us to see if anyone can identify who is whom.  That would be cool.  Do you think Tom Paul has a photo of himself as a child?  I'd like to see that!

Thanx Rich.
I was completely thrown by the tag "1939 World's fair".

Is there a follow-up story on George's performance at the WF?

did you notice that he was using a neutral grip in securing the trophy - rumor has it that he used a much stronger grip after future triumphs

Photography was not yet invented when Tom Paul was a child.

I knew George Bohto. I played marbles with George Bohto. George Bohto was a friend of mine.

George Bahto was no George Bohto.

Those willing to give Wayne Morrison something else to think about, please send me a childhood photo of yourself to jim.thompson@golfangelscrossing.com.  I'll be happy to post and get a little "when they were young" thread going.

Cheers!

Bump.

I've gotten a few and they are pretty funny. Don't be shy lads.  What about the young guns?  The west coast contingent?  Remember, self hazing is good for the soul!

Cheers!

Adam,
George still has his trophies and there is a good story too boot.  He's probably too busy to tell it though, probably out toolin' around in his just-restored 1960 TBird convertible that has: "a 430 cu in Lincoln engine bored out 30 over; a rare Mercury Super Marauder tri-power; continental kit; leather interior; real wire wheels from a 1963 Sport Roadster TBird; a fiberglass tonneau over the rear seat so it looks like a 2 seater and very RED paint".
As George says: "I've been a little crazy much of my life-hah!

As my dearly departed friend Gloria Hower used to say: "The only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys".

Tommy - nice (NOT) - you DOG
If a player insists on playing his maximum power on his tee-shot, it is not the architect's intention to allow him an overly wide target to hit to but rather should be allowed this privilege of maximum power except under conditions of exceptional skill.

yep there is a followup:

yes the fair was 2 years - very cool for a 10 yr old

48 guys (48-States) of us stayed at the Horn and Hardart Automat (you young guys have to Google that one) - very cool, u put nickles into a slot for food

ages were from 10- to 14 (and for a 10 year old, that's intimidating)

tournament every morning - then tour the fair in the PM - then every nite they toured us someplace in NY City: Broadway Show (Olson & Johnson - Hell's a Poppin); Dodger-Giant baseball game at the Polo Grounds and we got a signed ball from the Giant team; a dinner with the then heavyweight Champ Jimmy Braddock, if I remember right

there was so much in two weeks I really lost track of a lot of it

boy was that a long time ago, guys

marble format for the tourney:  10-ft pot (the ring - it was huge to me) with 15 marbles spaced in the middle. Just like pool, whoever got 8 marbles out of the ring won .....

for most of you, who don't know "jack" about "real" marbles  :P - somewhat like pool, if you knocked a marble out of the circle and your "shooter" stayed in the ring, you kept shooting  ...etc    a miss, and your opponent was up

what a laugh        Tommy, you're a jerk

I was thinking the the COR of the marbles of today should be rolled back to the time of the fair.   ;)
